SPRING VALLEY (12-27-15) — Helix sophomore transfer DESTINI ANDERSON exploded for 32 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks as the Matadors mowed down Mater Dei 71-42  in Saturday’s (Dec. 26) first round of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic WNBA Division.

Anderson was 16 for 16 on free throws.

Six-foot-1 senior ROZLYN PIERCE, perhaps the top rebounder for the Matadors, came off the injury list to collect 7 rebounds to go along with 6 points.

“It’s great to have her back but I had to limit her play to about 14 minutes,” said Mount Miguel coach ROBBIE SANDOVAL. “Nevertheless this gave us a complete squad for the first time all year.”

SATERA BATES blistered in 3 three-pointers to finish with 21 points.

As a team Mount Miguel netted 33 of 39 free throws.

Mount Miguel:  Destini Anderson 32 (11 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl, 2 blk), Satera Bates 21 (1 reb, 6 ast, 1 blk), Rozlyn Pierce 6 (7 reb), Amber Hard 6 (3 reb, 1 ast), Laila Smith 3 (5 reb, 2 ast, 3 stl), Michelle Corley 2 (4 reb), Camara Douglas 1 (2 reb).

OCEANSIDE 37, STEELE CANYON 36 –
It was close throughout, but sometimes the breaks just don’t go your way.  Unfortunately for Steele Canyon they found that out when they played Oceanside in the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic in a FIBA (Black Division) game that went to the Pirates 37-36 at West Hills High.

For a team that had had over 15 days off since its last game, Steele Canyon (3-1) did not have any major rust issues as they were solid in the first quarter.

The Pirates (8-2) jumped out to a 13-6 lead after eight minutes of play.  A key free throw by the Pirates gave them what would end up being the difference in the game.

In the second quarter, the Cougars outscored Oceanside 12-6.  The second half saw both teams match each other point for point.

ASHLEY TAVIZON scored a game-high 14 points, nine of which were in the first half.

The Cougars had very balanced scoring as they had seven players total scoring and three players scoring between four and ten points.

Steele Canyon looked to take the lead, but Tavizon missed an ill-advised shot with 12 seconds left on the game clock and plenty of time on the shot clock.

Steele Canyon: Ashley Tavizon 14 (4 reb, 2 stl, 2 ast, 2 blk), Jules Loibl 8 (9 reb, 5 stl, 1 ast), Kortni Fahle 4 (2 reb), Mariah Smith 4 (9 reb, 1 stl, 1 ast, 1 blk), Marie Estavillo 2 (1 reb, 1 stl, 1 ast), Marianna Martinez 2 (4 reb), Mya Cross 2 (7 reb, 1 stl), Reagan Jordan (4 stl), Elizabeth Bott (1 stl).

SAN PASQUAL 49, EL CAJON VALLEY 25 – The Braves had a hard time shifting into high gear in Saturday’s (Dec. 26) first round of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic FIBA (Gold Division).

Thus the Braves never reached double scoring digits in any of the four quarters.

MARY AWADICH paced the Braves with 11 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and one steal.

The normally high scoring LEANNA WATSON scored only 9 points as she was double- and triple-teamed throughout the game.

“Our girls looked sleepy after the early morning start the day previous,” noted El Cajon Valley coach CARLOS MOSS.

“I told Leanna that it’s a badge of respect when she draws so much defensive attention,” said Moss. “It’s almost like the minute she walks in the door she draws one girl and then by the time the game begins she’s got three on her. And they’re relentless.”

El Cajon Valley:  Mary Awadich 11 (6 reb, 2 ast, 1 stl), Leanna Watson 9 (3 reb, 1 ast, 4 stl), Titishia Clemons 5 (3 reb, 1 ast, 7 stl), Farah Kannan (6 reb, 2 stl), Kaheen Hasan (6 reb, 2 stl), Rabab Issa-Taba (5 reb).
