CHULA VISTA (3-20-16) — The Bonita Vista Barons took on the Santana Sultans in the Hilltop Tournament at Hilltop High and came away with the 7-1 victory in their first game of the day on Saturday (Mar. 19).

The Sultans couldn’t take advantage of their opportunities especially with only one out.  In the first inning, the Sultans were in prime position as CASSIDY MATTHIE (1-3) singled, as well as SYDNEY VATES (2-2), and MADISON MENDEZ walked to load the bases. With two outs CELINE MENARD came to the plate but grounded out to end the inning.

Bonita Vista in the bottom of the second inning would put up a 4 spot that included a well-smashed opposite field solo homer to lead 4-0. The Sultans would answer in the top of the third inning when MACKENZIE BENNETT (1-2, RBI, R, HR) just absolutely got hold of the pitch and hammered it high in the air to left where it landed deep into the other playing field for a homer. There are no fences so on many you would have to hustle in but this one was no doubt going to be a round tripper. So with the dinger the score was now 4-1.

The Barons answered in the bottom of the third inning with a solo blast and tack on a couple more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Santana threatened in the top of the sixth as Mendez would single and BRITTANY MUNDAY came in to run, Menard was hit by a pitch, NICOLE PENTON MARCH came in to run, and the next three batters would be retired to end the game.


SANTANA 13, EL CAPITAN 4 (5 inn.) – 
The second game of the day for the Santana Sultans they renewed their rivalry with the El Capitan Vaqueros and were able to come away with the 13-4 victory in the Hilltop Tournament at Hilltop High in 5 innings.

Both teams went down in the first inning and in the top of the second inning the Vaqueros struck first to take an early 1-0 lead. Leadoff hitter AMANDA VASQUEZ (1-1) drew the walk, stole second base, and came into score on a couple mistakes made by the Sultans.

Santana would however answer back in the bottom of the inning as they pushed across 8 runs to take an 8-1 lead thanks to seven hits.  Leadoff hitter CASSIDY MATTHIE (1-2, R, 2 RBI, HR) flied out deep to centerfield for the first out, CELINE MENARD (1-2, R, 3B) proceeded to triple to leftfield, JORDAN TEEGARDEN (1-2, 3 RBI, R) singled in Menard, LEXI CHAVARIN-MIRANDA singled, SYDNEY BENJAMIN walked loading the bases, MADDY MENDEZ singled in Teegarden and the other two advanced to second and third, ERICA REID came into run for Mendez, MACKENZIE BENNETT (2-4, 2 RBI) singled in Chavarin-Miranda and Benjamin, Reid would advance to third on the throw and Bennett would move to second, ASHLEY MADRIGAL came into run for Bennett, SYDNEY VATES (2-3, 3 RBI, 2 R, HR) singled in both Reid and Madrigal, and the final blow came on the two run bomb to left field by Matthie.

However the Vaqueros would rally a little with three runs of their own in the top of the third inning to make it 8-4. MADISYN WIEHER (1-2, R) singled with one out, ZANDRA RAGALE (2-2, R) singled to center, ALLYSON VON YOKES (1-3, R, RBI) singled which scored Wieher, VASQUEZ singled, NICOLE VACARRO came into run, KIM GARCIA (1-3, 2 RBI) knocked in both Ragale and Von Yokes.

The Sultans would add five runs over the next two innings including a blast to center by Vates for a homerun.

Getting the victory for the Sultans was Mendez who went all 5 innings, giving up 4 runs of which 3 were earned on 6 hits and walking 3 while striking out 7.

IMPERIAL 11, EL CAPITAN 3 – In their second game of the day the El Capitan Vaqueros dropped an 11-3 decision to the Imperial Tigers in the Hilltop tournament at Hilltop High, Saturday (Mar.19).

The Tigers didn’t take long to find the offense as they pushed across two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead early on.  They would tack on another run in the third inning to lead 3-0 thanks to a solo shot.

However in their half of the third inning the Vaqueros got back into the game as they were able to push across three runs to knot the score at 3-3.  Leadoff hitter MADISYN WIEHER (2-4, R) singled, she advanced on the sacrifice bunt by ZANDRA RAGALE (2-3), ALLYSON VON YOKES (1-3, RBI, R) singled which scored Wieher, GRACE BURKETT (3-4, R) singled advancing Von Yokes to third, Burkett proceeded to steal second base. Both Burkett and Von Yokes would both come into score in the inning.

Unfortunately for the Vaqueros, the Tigers thanks to multiple base hits in the fourth scored six runs to take a 9-3 lead. They would tack on runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

STEELE CANYON 12, OTAY RANCH 0 – In Hilltop Tournament at Otay Ranch High, the Steele Canyon Cougars took a bite out of the Otay Ranch Mustangs 12-0 in 5 innings, Saturday (Mar. 19).

The Cougars did all their work in the bottom of the first when they exploded for 12 runs on 9 hits in the inning.  Leadoff hitter AUDREY BAGGE (2-2, 2 RBI, 2B) banged a double, GENTRY HOFFMAN (2-2, 3 RBI, 2B) doubled in Bagge, MAKAYLA STROMENGER (1-1, 2 R, 2 RBI, HR) walked, JJ VENZOR (2-3, 3 RBI, R, HR) singled which scored Hoffman, EMMA DODSON singled, Stromenger stole home, MARIANNA MARTINEZ reached on a fielder’s choice. Both Bagge and Hoffman came back up and each hit 2-run doubles back to back, Stromenger would than blast a two run homer, MAKAYLA MCCARTHY singled and Venzor hammered a two run homer.

This was all the run support needed for McCarthy as she tossed 5 strong innings for the shutout victory, giving up only 5 hits while walking one and fanning 7 on the day.

STEELE CANYON 15, SWEETWATER 0 – In their second game of the day out at Otay Ranch High as part of the Hilltop Tournament the Steele Canyon Cougars proceeded to make short work of Sweetwater High 15-0 in five innings.

The Cougars pounded out 7 hits and score 9 runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 9-0 lead. AUDREY BAGGE (2-4, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2 2B) led off with a walk, GENTRY HOFFMAN (5-5, 2 RBI, 3 R, 2B) bunted for a single, Bagge to second, MAKAYLA STROMENGER (2-5, RBI, 2 R, 2B) reached on an error, MAKAYLA MCCARTHY (2-4, 3 RBI, R, 2B) knocked in a couple runs with a single, JJ VENZOR singled, SAMANTHA MILLER (1-1, 2 RBI, R, 2B) doubled in a couple of runs, ASHLEY TAVIZON (1-4, 2 RBI) grounded out but a run scored, Bagge came back up and doubled in a run, Hoffman doubled in another run and Stromenger doubled in another run, McCarthy finished the inning off with a double.

Steele Canyon would again in the bottom of the second inning would again proceed to explode offensively as they scored 6 more runs to make it 15-0. The first batter Bagge grounded out to short, Hoffman singled, Stromenger doubled moving Hoffman to third, she would score on the sacrifice fly by McCarthy, Venzor would reach on an error, MARIANNA MARTINEZ (1-2, R) came into hit for Dodson and proceeded to single, MACKENSIE PEARLSTEIN (2-4) singled, Miller singled, Tavizon knocked in a run, and both Bagge and Hoffman would both drive in runs consecutively to finish out the scoring.

Matching the offense was the dominating pitching of NICKI DEPAOLA who came really close to tossing a perfect game. She tossed 5 scoreless innings, walked one and struck out 2 in tossing a no hitter.

OTAY RANCH 8, VALHALLA 0 – In the first game of the day for the Valhalla Norsemen in the Hilltop Ttournament they took on the Otay Ranch Mustangs. The Mustangs came out on top 8-0.

In the top of the second the Norsemen threatened as RACHEL SHELSTROM walked, EMILY HOWARD moved her up on a sacrifice bunt. Shelstrom would be stranded as the next two batters would be retired.

The Mustangs would score 3 runs in the bottom of the second inning to go up 3-0.

The Norsemen would be hamstrung all day as they were limited to only three hits.

VALHALLA 17, SWEETWATER 3 – In the second game of the day the Valhalla Norsemen hammered the Red Devils of Sweetwater High in Hilltop Tournament action 17-3, Saturday (Mar. 19).

Valhalla proceeded to pound out 16 hits in the offensive explosion including 10 runs in the sixth inning.

Leading off was BRANDI KOHEL (2-2, 3 R, SB) who reached on an error, she stole second base, SAMMY GREEN (2-3, 2 R) singled, GIAVANNA STEINER came in to run, RACHEL SHELSTROM (3-3, 2 R) advanced the runners with a bunt single, EMILY HOWARD (3-4, 5 RBI, 3 R, 2 2B) doubled in Kohel and Green and VICTORIA VILLEGAS (2-4, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2B) singled. Scoring in the inning also was Shelstrom and Howard to make the score 4-0.

Valhalla would tack on a run in the top of the second inning as KELLY OLSON (1-2, 2 R, SB) would single and come around to score.  Sweetwater broke through with a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-1. The Norsemen would score a run in the top of the third and also the fifth and Sweetwater scored twice in the bottom of the fifth.  After five innings it was 7-3 in favor of the Norsemen.

The real fireworks came in the top of the sixth as the Norsemen teed off for 10 runs. JADE HILL (2-4, R, HR) would blast a solo shot, Shelstrom would score on a double by Howard, she would come around to score. SARAH BOTTE would score, Villegas would knock in a couple of runs as well.

In the circle for Valhalla was TORRI BASSETTE who tossed the complete game and garnered the victory. She gave up 3 runs on 5 hits and strike out 1 on the day.

HELIX 5, LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY 3 – The Helix Highlanders took on the home team La Jolla Country Day Torreys in the Duds by Dudes tournament and in a back and forth affair came out on top 5-3, Saturday (Mar. 19).

In the top of the first the Highlanders would strike first as they pushed across a run to lead 1-0 early on. With two outs DESTINI BULLOCK (2-2, 2 R) singled, she would advance on a single by MCKENZIE FLORES and would come around on a RBI single by GABBY OLIVARRIA (2-4, RBI, R).

The lead would hold until the bottom of the fourth when the Torreys took advantage of a couple of Helix miscues to take the 2-1 lead. However that wouldn’t last as Helix in the top of the fifth thanks to a one out single by Bullock, who would score on a single by Olivarria who herself would score thanks to an error committed by the Torreys catcher. The Torreys in the bottom of the inning again took advantage of a Helix error along with a couple of singles to tie the game up.

Finally in the top of the sixth the Highlanders would take the lead for good as FAITH KING (2-3, R) led off with a single, BRIANNA REED (2-4, R) followed with a single and both would come around to score on a single by VICTORIA CYMAN.

The lead would hold up as the Torreys would be shutout in the bottom of the sixth. However due to time the contest was called thus giving Helix the victory.

HELIX 13, CHULA VISTA 1 – In their second game of the day the Highlanders made the most of their opportunities in their 13-1 victory over the Chula Vista Spartans in the Duds by Dudes tournament at La Jolla Country Day, Saturday (Mar. 19).

The Spartans got on the board first with a run in the top of the second thanks to a couple of base hits to lead 1-0. However the Highlanders came back in the bottom of the second with 4 runs. Leadoff hitter MCKENZIE FLORES (2-2, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2B) walked and GABBY OLIVARRA (2-3, 2 R, 3 RBI, HR) blasted a 2-run homer to right center, KENDI SWINTON (2 R) walked and scored on a double by FAITH KING, she would score on a double by BRIANNA REED (2-3, 3 RBI).

So with the score 4-1 Helix, they would five more in the third to lead 9-1 and add four more in the fourth.  Reed would get the victory on the day as she went the full 4 ½ innings only giving up the one run on 4 hits and struck out 2 to get her second victory on the season.

SERRA 11, HORIZON 2 – A balanced attack by the Serra Conquistadors helped them in their 11-2 victory over Horizon in their first game of the day in the Duds by Dudes tournament at La Jolla Country Day, Saturday (Mar.19).

The Conquistadors would go up 2-0 early on as leadoff hitter DARBY TIBBETS singled and stole second base, she would come in to score on a single by AMBER WOZNIAK (4-4, 5 RBI, 4 R, HR, 3B, 2B) who also would score in the inning.

They would extend their lead in the third inning thanks to a rocket double by Wozniak who advanced to third on a wild pitch. She would come in on the sacrifice fly by TAYLOR CURLY (2 RBI). Both MEGAN POOLE (1-2, R) and SELA FALLON (RUN) would score as well in the inning to make it 5-0.  Serra would tack on four more runs in the fourth inning as KRISTA RASK singled, Tibbetts singled, VIVIAN TOMOVICH (1-3, 2 R) walked loading the bases. Next came up Wozniak who clubbed a bases clearing triple to put herself within a homer of accomplishing the cycle on the day.

In the top of the sixth Wozniak got the opportunity for the cycle as Tomovich singled bringing her to the plate. It would take a few pitches but Wozniak on the 1-2 count just absolutely crushed the pitch over the left field fence for the 2-run blast and also the cycle.

Tibbetts who helped her cause offensively took the circle and tossed a gem as she only allowed one hit on the day and no earned runs and struck out five while walked none in her five innings of work for the victory.

SERRA 8, BISHOPS 7 – In an exciting Duds by Dudes tournament contest at La Jolla Country Day, the Serra Conquistadors scored a late run in the bottom of the seventh to get the 8-7 victory, Saturday (Mar. 19).

Bishops would strike first as they scored twice in the top of the first inning to lead 2-0. They would tack on a couple more runs in the top of the third to extend their lead 4-0.

However the Conquistadors would pull within a run as they plated three runs in the bottom half of the third to make it 4-3.  VIVIAN TOMOVICH (2-5, RBI, 2B) doubled, AMBER WOZNIAK (1-4, 2 RBI, 2 R, HR) walked, TAYLOR CURLY (1-3, R, RBI) walked to load the bases, JORDAN GRAVES (2-3, 3 RBI, 2B) would smash a bases clearing double.

In the bottom of the fourth, Serra would take the lead as Wozniak continued her big day by belting a 2-run bomb over the left field wall to make it 5-4.  The Knights would tie the score in the top of the fifth but Serra again would retake the lead in the bottom of the inning as Graves led off with a single, she would come around later on a Tomovich single.

However the lead wouldn’t last as Bishops would score twice in the top of the sixth to retake the lead 7-6.  Again trailing the Conquistadors would scratch a run across to tie it in the bottom of the inning at 7-7 thanks to a RBI single by JACQUELINE KAMERY (R, RBI) that scored JAELYN RONINSON (2 R). Bishops wouldn’t score in the top of the seventh which would give the Conquistadors an opportunity to win the ballgame.

In dramatic fashion the Conquistadors came through to score the winning run as KRISTA RUSK (RUN) was placed at second base, she would move to third on a single by Tibbetts and would score on the game winning single by Curly.

With the victory the Conquistadors had won the final points standings thus giving them the Duds by Dudes Torreys Invitational Championship.
