Griffins refuse to lose two in-a-row, crush Mesa

KEARNY MESA (4-2-16) – One day after getting shutout, the eighth-ranked Grossmont College Griffins defeated San Diego Mesa 9-2 in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference contest on Friday (Apr. 1) in central San Diego.
ROBERT BOSTEDT (Granite Hills) did quite a bit of the heavy lifting as he had one-third of the Griffins’ (19-8, 12-3 PCAC) hits on the day. The team knocked the Mesa (9-17, 5-11 PCAC) pitching staff around for 12 hits.
DONAVON McCRYSTAL (5-0, West Hills) got the victory after throwing seven innings of seven hit ball and a walk leading to a pair of runs (one earned). McCrystal also registered five strikeouts. ANDREW SCHULTZ (Patrick Henry) closed out the game with two innings of hitless relief. Four of Schultz’ six outs came via the strikeout route.
TANNER PERRY (Steele Canyon) got the game underway with a single to left field. Bostedt followed that up with a single to center to push Perry to second. Both runners pulled off the double steal. TRAVOR BEARD (San Clemente) recorded the first out when he grounded out to second, but that allowed Perry to score and Bostedt to third. NOAH STROHL (La Jolla) got the hit string going again with a single to left allowing Bostedt to score. Strohl advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a JUSTEN BURKEY (San Pasqual) single to center for a 3-0 lead after a half inning of play.
Skipping ahead to the third inning, the Griffins got things rolling again. Bostedt tripled to right center to get the inning off the ground. Beard singled to right field to bring in Bostedt. Three batters later, Beard scored on a ALEX RIOS (Mater Dei, San Diego) ground out to push the Griffin lead to 5-0.
Mesa scratched their way with a pair of singles. The run scored while Grossmont was pulling off a double play.
Grossmont put another three spot on the board in the sixth. Rios singled to center to lead the inning off. JUSTIN MITCHELL (Granite Hills) walked forcing Rios to second. SEAN CROSBY (Valhalla) sacrificed himself to move both runners up 90 feet. MICHAEL DIFFLEY (Granite Hills) cleared the bases with a triple to right center for a 7-1 Griffin advantage. Diffley was brought home with a Perry sacrifice fly for an 8-1 advantage.
After a pitching change for Mesa to begin the seventh, Strohl was issued a walk. A ground out advanced him to second. Rios’ second hit of the day pushed him across home plate for the Griffins ninth run of the day.
Mesa would score an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh.
Grossmont will face San Diego City (11-9, 6-5 PCAC) who will be coming off a week that saw them sweep Imperial Valley (4-23, 0-15 PCAC). Tuesday’s and Friday’s games will be at Morley Field, while Thursday will see the teams face off at Noel Mickelsen Field. All three games are slated to begin at 2 p.m.
