EL CAJON (5-18-16) — There was no question at the outset that the Grossmont Hills League was going to be a fight to the finish. Early predictions were clear that the GHL circuit championship would come down to the final week of the season.
And so it has.
Granite Hills and Helix are deadlocked for first place with two games remaining. The Eagles will host the Highlanders on Wednesday (May 18) at 4 p.m.
Even if coach JAMES DAVIS’ club is able to knock off the Scotties, that will only carry them to a GHL co-championship.
These same two teams will meet a day later in La Mesa, which could develop into a conference championship if the last two games go in the same team’s favor.
Grossmont spoiled Granite Hills’ chances of locking up the league championship on Tuesday (May 17) by claiming a 6-4 victory in nine innings. The Grossmont victory kept the Foothillers’ championship chances alive in that the Hillers could pilfer the crown by defeating last place Valhalla twice to conclude the season.
Of course that’s all speculation.
Meanwhile a sweep by the Eagles will award Granite Hills the GHL championship.
“Our destiny is in our own hands,” said Eagles coach JAMES DAVIS. “This is probably the most important week of our season.”
Granite Hills may have taken a grip on the championship had not Grossmont rung up the 6-4 victory on Tuesday on a clutch pinch hit RBI single by freshman CALEB TEDOKON in the ninth inning at Granite Hills.
Tedokon’s blow followed a walk to JAYDEN LOMBARDO and a double to STEVEN OUELLETTE. A sacrifice fly by KYLE PINEDA cashed in an insurance run after the freshman catcher broke the tie with a base hit.
Brown-bound CALVIN FARRIS noted, “I haven’t had a chance to pitch for two weeks for one reason or another. But I’ll tell you this, what we want is sole possession of the league championship and a playoff spot. It’ll be disappointing if we don’t make the Open Division.”
HELIX 4, STEELE CANYON 2 – Do not count out the Helix Highlanders. With two games to play, Helix is very much alive in the race for the Grossmont Hills League playoffs.
The Highlanders are a team that is deep in pitching.
“We like our chances,” said Helix coach COLE HOLLAND. “We definitely have the pitching.”
Which the Scotties proved on Tuesday (May 17) when KEATON CHASE pitched a complete game 4-hitter to conquer the Cougars of Steele Canyon.
Bottom line is Helix needs to win its final two games without interruption to claim the crown. That is definitely a possibility as the Highlanders complete their final two games against Granite Hills.
Helix has been a team that doesn’t produce major rallies but is able to complete a series of hits when the game is on the line.
ERIC SMELKO was 2-for-4 in Helix’s victory over Steele Canyon.
EL CAPITAN 2, VALHALLA 1 – El Capitan squeezed out a 2-1 victory in double time to keep its playoff journey on track during Tuesday’s (May 17) Grossmont Hills League encounter with the Norsemen.
Can El Capitan play the spoiler or even sneak up the ladder to claim the championship?
Making the playoffs is a long shot for the Vaqueros, who are led by catcher JASON MOORMAN – a solid backstop.
Moorman was 2-for-3 for the Vaqueros, while JAKE MEDFORD doubled home Moorman in the first.
DILLON WINEMAKER struck out five in delivering a complete game for El Cap.
Valhalla’s C.J. BROWN tied the game with a sac fly in the sixth inning.
DAWSON MCCLANAHAN plated the decisive run with a single, scoring Moorman, who doubled.
SANTANA 10, MOUNT MIGUEL 1 – No. 4 ranked Santana mowed down Mount Miguel in Tuesday’s (May 17) Grossmont Valley League contest.
Santana has positioned itself into a possible GVL title with crosstown rival West Hills.
TRISTEN SALINAS was a double threat in Santana’s conquest of Mount Miguel. On the mound he was 5-0 with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts, no hits and no runs allowed. He swung the bat pretty well too, collecting 2 hits in 4 at-bats with a double and a single while scoring three times in the Santana leadoff spot.
Santana hammered out 10 hits while holding Mount Miguel to a mere 2 hits in the lopsided victory.
MONTE VISTA 15, EL CAJON VALLEY 4 – Monte Vista battered the Braves in Tuesday’s (May 17) Grossmont Valley League contest.
JUSTIN SCHWEIZER was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored for the Monarchs.
JOSE ALVAREZ was 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored, and BRYAN HARMON was 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI.
FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 16, ARMY-NAVY 2 – Foothills Christian took over the lead in the Ocean League by whacking the Warriors of Army-Navy 16-2 in Tuesday’s (May 17) contest.
KONNER VON DER LIETH allowed only one hit and 2 runs while striking out 9 in six innings for the Knights.
JUSTIN EICHER pitched the final inning and struck out all three batters for Foothills Christian.
EZRA SIMS was 4-for-5 with 5 runs scored and 4 RBI to lead the Knights, while Von Der Lieth was 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI.
Army-Navy third baseman Sean Garvey, son of Steve Garvey, was 1-for-3 with a double.
