East has four winners in openers

EL CAJON (11-29-16) — It is always a good thing to start a season on right foot with a win and that is exactly what the Santana Sultans did as they took on the Rock Academy at Christian High School. Santana did so with a convincing 63-18 victory, Monday (Nov. 28th).

The Sultans controlled the first half as they led the whole time and ended up heading into the second half leading 41-6.

For the Sultans, three players scored in double-digits led by NICK BERHALTER, who poured in 16 points, while both ZAYE LEGGITT and ANDREW HITCHCOCK scored 10 points apiece.

Santana led the entire way including the second half as they outscored The Rock 22-12 in the second half.

It was a balanced night offensively as seven players scored for the Sultans and also everyone contributed in one way or another including 23 steals and 14 boards as a team.

Santana: Nick Berhalter 16 (4 reb, 2 ast),  Andrew Hitchcock 10 (3 stl, 2 ast, 3 reb), Zaye Leggitt 10 (1 stl, 1 ast, 1 reb),  Bobof 8 (2 stl, 1 ast, 1 reb), Simone Maritano 7 (8 stl, 4 ast), TC Simmons 6 (5 stl, 2 reb), B. Simmons 6 (2 stl, 6 reb, 4 ast).

 

MOUNT MIGUEL 64, SAN PASQUAL 27 – DARIAN NORWOOD ripped off 18 points and claimed 11 rebounds as the Matadors opened the season by smothering San Pasqual 64-27 in Monday’s (Nov. 28) first round of the Baron Matador Classic.

MARQUISE EDWARDS chipped in with 11 points including one 3 and 5-for-5 free throw shooting, as the Matadors muscled their way to a 53-15 blowout after three quarters.

Eleven Mount Miguel players scored in the rout, including MUGABE MILLER who tallied 10 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals.

DEVON BROWN was a force on the boards with 6 points and 10 rebounds.

MARQUIS NEAL hit a pair of 3s.

CHRISTIAN 70, LIBERTY CHARTER 44 – NASHOM CARTER cranked in 20 points to open up a running attack for the Christian High Patriots against Liberty Charter of Lemon Grove in a game that presented the Patriots with a 48-13 halftime lead in the Greater San Diego Shootout.

Freshman DONTE BRISTOL led the supporting cast with 16 points, while DOMANIC SAFARTA added 15.

“We’re a very young team but we have high energy,” said Patriots assistant coach MICHAEL ANGULO.

DANIEL WELCH chipped in with 11 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal.

JACK MASON  added 4 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists.

JACKSON LARSEN pitched in with 6 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals, and PATRICK ROBERTS knocked down 5 points and grabbed 3 rebounds.

Christian: Nashom Carter 20, Daniel Welch 11 (5 reb, 1 ast, 1 stl), Jack Mason 4 (8 reb, 2 ast), Jackson Larson 6 (6 reb, 3 stl), Patrick Roberts 5 (3 reb).

CARMEL 52, MONTE VISTA 37– Coach MIKE TULLY’s Monte Vista Monarchs lost nine players from last year’s varsity, yet his Monarchs were tied with the Sun Devils at 15-15 in the first quarter.

Monte Vista in fact trailed by only 3 at halftime.

The Monarchs put on a second half charge, trailing only 39-32 after three periods.

DEONDRE McHAYLE scored 26 points and snagged 8 rebounds but it wasn’t near enough to shut down the Sun Devils in the Eagle Invitational.

Monte Vista could not overcome the five 3-pointers of Mt. Carmel’s Nathan Middleton.

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN  83, MURIETTA 60 – McDonald’s All-American prospect JAYLEN HANDS, regarded as a potential top 30 player in the nation, scored a game high 41 points for the Knights as they defeated Murietta Valley in the 2016 BattleZone Tournament at Corona’s Centennial High.
