Griffins blow lead, fall to Mesa in OT

Grossmont and Mesa are set to tip-off Friday at Grossmont College.

EL CAJON (1-14-17) — San Diego Mesa College scrambled to a 68-65 overtime victory over Grossmont College in Friday’s (Jan. 13) contest to open Pacific Coast Athletic Conference-South play.
Mesa (3-14) trailed 44-30 in the first half.
Grossmont fought back to tie the game by intermission at 60-60.
The teams dribbled into overtime with the Olympians taking an 8-5 lead to pull out the victory.
DAVID WHEELER paced the Griffins with 22 points. He was 6 for 19 from the floor and 7 for 8 from the free throw line. He also dropped in 3 treys and snared 5 rebounds.
RONALD BLAIN added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Griffins.
Grossmont shot just 35 percent to the Olympians’ 45 percent.
Next up for the Griffins is a bout with San Diego City College on Wednesday (Jan. 18) at City at 5 p.m. It will be the third meeting between the two teams, and the Knights have won the first two.
Grossmont has now lost five-straight games. The Griffins’ bench outscored the starters, 45-20.
