ROUNDUP: Foothillers, Monarchs win tourney games

ESCONDIDO (3-7-17) The Grossmont Foothillers took advantage of their seven hits on the night as they won their Cougar Classic pool play contest, 6-1, over Mission Vista Tuesday.

Early on the contest looked like it would go either teams way as both teams couldn’t do anything offensively.

Mission Vista scratched a run in the top of the first to lead 1-0. Grossmont matched that with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at 1-1.

The Foothillers took advantage of a two-out walk by ALY ALLMAN, TAYLOR BAEZ came up and singled advancing Allman to third, Allman would score as Mission Vista corked a passed ball.

The contest went into the fourth inning tied at 1-1 when Grossmont got a single by Allman and a two-run bomb by Baez, which was her third game in a row with a home run to give Grossmont a 3-1 lead.

Grossmont tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning to push the score to 6-1 as CANDACE HENDERSON led off with a single, JORDAN BROWN came into run, CHLOE CAMARERO was hit by a pitch, DESTINY BACON singled in a run and Allman would drive in the last two runs. After the last run was scored the contest was called for time limit rules.

CASSIDY DAVILA garnered the victory for the Foothillers as she tossed 5 innings, giving up the 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 6 on the evening.

 

BONITA VISTA 8, STEELE CANYON 4 – In Cougar Classic pool play, the Steele Canyon Cougars took on the Bonita Vista Barons and unfortunately ran out of gas in their comeback.

Early on the Barons offense looked like they would run away with the contest as they blasted a two-run homer to go up 3-0 after the top of the first and pushed across 5 runs in the top of the third to take an 8-0 lead.

However, the Cougars had other ideas as they clawed back with a couple of runs in the bottom of the 4th to make it 8-2.

Leading the way for Steele Canyon was JESSICA VENZOR, who jacked a home run and drove in 3 RBI and scored a run as she went 2-3.

The only other Cougar to have multiple hits on the day was MAKAYALA STROMENGER, who went 2-3, drove in a run and scored one as well.

Steele Canyon would score a couple more runs in the bottom of the 5th to cut the Baron lead in half 8-4 before the contest was called under time limit rules.

 

GRANITE HILLS 3, CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC 3 – The Eagles, despite only 4 hits on the day, showed they could play with the big teams as they rallied to knot the score before the Cougar Classic pool play contest was called.

The Dons early on showed why they are one of the top teams in the county and finished high in the Open Division last season as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings.

Pitching wise, MEGAN FARAIMO for the Dons shut down the Eagles one by one until the top of the fifth inning.

The Eagles the entire time were able to put the bat on the ball but just couldn’t get the ball to fall their way until RILEY AGERBEEK (1-3, RBI, R, HR) came up in the fifth and slammed a long ball over the fence to put Granite on the board and only trail 3-1.

They would also put together a rally in the top of the sixth inning with a couple of runs thanks to KAREN CREECH and HALLE KYLER, who would both score to tie the game at 3-3 before the contest was called under time limit rules.

 

CALEXICO 6, VALHALLA 5 – The Norseman started strong but too many missed opportunities doomed them as they dropped a Cougar Classic pool play contest.

Valhalla in the first inning got things rolling as JADE HILL led off the game with a long blast over the fence for the solo shot to give the Norsemen an early 1-0 lead. They would tack on another run as RACHEL

However. the lead didn’t last as Calexico took advantage of miscues and pushed across 4 runs to take a 4-2 lead after the first inning. They scored another run in the bottom of the first to lead 5-2.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Norsemen offense came alive as KENNEDY LABSHERE led off with a single, VICTORIA VILLEGAS banged a double, SAMMY GREEN hit into a fielder’s choice and a couple batters later, a single occurred that scored a couple of runs. Valhalla was able to tie the score at 5-5.

The tie would only last until the bottom of the inning as Calexico was able to break it as they scored a run to give themselves a 6-5 lead and that would be it as the contest was called for time limit rules.

 

 

POWAY 6, SANTANA 1 – Poway used both offense and pitching to garner the victory in Cougar Classic pool play over the Sultans.

Early on the Titans offense got rolling as they put up runs early on. This led to some tinkering of the lineup for the Sultans which saw many players playing in interesting positions. The girls showed they could play pretty much all the positions which bodes well for Santana.

The Sultans offense just couldn’t get going as they only put up the one run despite having some opportunities.

The game was called after the time limit had passed.

 

MONTE VISTA 17, ORANGE GLEN 0 – The Monarchs run-ruled the Patriots in Monte Vista tournament action.

For the Monarchs, CYANNA MOODY went 2-3 drove in a run and scored twice and doubled, CIERRA ROSS went 2-2, scored a run and drove in 2 RBI and SAVANNAH SOBOTKA also went 2-3, scored a run and drove in a couple of runs.

Sobotka also garnered the victory, tossing 4 innings of 1 hit ball, while striking out 8 on the day.
