ROUNDUP: Eagles win walk-off; Sultans tie

ESCONDIDO (3-8-17) – Despite an early lead, then a late rally by Chaparral, Granite Hills got a dramatic walk-off, giving the Eagles the 5-4 victory in Cougar Classic pool play.

Early on, the Eagles offense was able to push across runs in the first couple of innings to lead 3-0 after two innings. However the Pumas despite being held in check the whole game finally broke through in the top of the fifth with 4 runs to take a 4-3 lead.

Now trailing, the Eagles were running out of time as the time limit was not in their favor. Granite Hills in the bottom of the fifth came up and took advantage and were able to rally with two runs to come from behind and win 5-4.

The driving force for the Eagles was KAREN CREECH. who not only stole a base but scored a couple runs as she went 1-2. STACI CHAMBERS had multiple hits on the day going 2-2. Besides scoring a run, BROOKE BERTUSSI also swiped two bases and so did RILEY OMAHEN.

SANTANA 3, OTAY RANCH 3 – A late rally by the Sultans allowed them to knot the score just before it was called for time limit rules.

 

The Mustangs would break through in the top of the fifth inning as they pushed across three runs to lead 3-0. Santana would match that with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth to tie the score 3-3

There would be a sixth inning but both teams went scoreless.

However, the game was called.

SCRIPPS RANCH 11, STEELE CANYON 0 (5 inn.) – The Falcons of Scripps Ranch took the game over in the bottom of the third and never looked back as they won easily in Cougar Classic pool play.

Early on things were looking good as there was no score through the first couple of innings.

However, things fell apart for the Cougars in the bottom of the third as Scripps Ranch pushed across three runs to lead 3-0.  They would add 7 more runs over the next couple of innings to round out the scoring.

Steele Canyon was held to five hits on the evening with Sophomore AUDREY BAGGE the only hitter to collect more than one, as she went 2-3 including a double.

UNIVERSITY CITY 8, HELIX 2 – The Highlanders, despite leading early, couldn’t hold on as they dropped a Monte Vista Tournament contest.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second the Highlanders were able to push across a couple of runs to lead 2-1 but it wouldn’t last as the offense for the Centurions came alive in the top of the fourth and never looked back.

Helix on the day was held in check as they were limited to three hits in the contest.
