ROUNDUP: Eagles, Sultans, Scotties win

Helix's MCKENZIE FLORES and GABBY OLIVARRIA combined for six hits, two doubles, two RBI and five runs on Thursday.

ESCONDIDO (3-9-17)Pitching mixed in with some timely hitting equaled a win for the Granite Hills Eagles as they defeated Westview 6-0 in Cougar Classic pool play.

For the Eagles, HALEY JOHNSON drove in 2 runs as she had 3 hits on the evening. Both KAYLA MACK and KAREN CREECH each had two hits on the night. Overall, the Eagles pounded out 9 hits including a couple of extra base hits.

The offense came alive in the first inning as they were able to push across a couple of runs to lead 2-0 and in the bottom of the third extended their lead to 5-0 with three more.

In the circle, CATIE DOBBS struck out 8 on her way to a complete game 5 inning 3 hit shutout.

SANTANA 4, LA COSTA CANYON 2 – The Sultans survived an early miscue and in the end used their opportunities to hack the Mavericks in Cougar Classic pool play.

Santana’s potent top of the lineup started early as MADISON MENDEZ (3-4, RBI, R, 2B) ripped a double to center, MACKENZNIE BENNETT (3-4, 2 RBI, R, HR) then followed with a 2-run big mack attack jack over the center field fence to give the Sultans a 2-0 lead early on.

The Mavericks would answer in the bottom of the first with two runs of their own as the second and third batters got on and with two outs what appeared to be a routine hit ball hit to left was misplayed and that allowed LCC to tie the score.

Both teams would shut each other down until the Sultans in the top of the sixth inning broke through to retake the lead.  Leadoff hitter SYDNEY BENJAMIN (run) walked, she advanced on a sacrifice bunt, ERICA REID (1-1) singled and Benjamin advanced to third, NICOLE MADRIGAL (1-1, R) came into run for Reid, Mended singled which scored Benjamin and RACHEL WILSON (1-3, RBI, 2B) doubled with two outs scoring Madrigal to give Santana a 4-2 lead.

Mendez on the day tossed 5 2/3 of 3 hit ball, striking out 4 while only giving up the 2 runs in the victory.

VALHALLA 8, ESCONDIDO 8 – The Norsemen take big early lead and falter late as their Cougar Classic pool play contest ended in a tie.

The Cougars of Escondido in the bottom of the first take an early 1-0 lead thanks to multiple hits. However, the lead didn’t last as a couple of innings later in the top of the third inning the offense of Valhalla just exploded as they pushed across 7 runs to take a 7-1 lead.

SAMMY GREEN would get on base, RACHEL SHELSTROM singled, KENNEDY LABSHERE would get on base to load the bases, up came VICTORIA VILLEGAS, who just absolutely crushed the offering over the fence for a grand slam homer to give Valhalla a 4-1 lead. The next batter KELLY OLSON singled, SARAH BOTTE walked, the next batter singled in a run and they would score a couple more to round out the scoring.

Things were going alright for the Norsemen as they shut down the Cougars until they were able to break through with a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-2. Valhalla scored a run in the top of the seventh thanks to a double by Olson who would score.

However, in the bottom of the seventh, the wheels came apart for Valhalla as the Cougars took advantage of miscues along with multiple hits to score 7 runs in the inning to tie the score at 8-8 and that is where it finished.

HELIX 9, EL CAMINO 1 – The Highlanders traveled all the way up to the North County in Oceanside and enjoy the ride home as they prevailed in their last game of pool play in the Monte Vista Gold Classic.

Helix scored two runs in the first inning thanks to a 2-out, 2-run single by freshman KASEY CASTRO to give Helix a 2-0 lead. In the inning, FRANKIE MARTINEZ walked and MCKENZIE FLORES (3-3, 2 2B, RBI, 3 R) doubled.

The Highlanders tacked onto their lead in the top of the third when Flores led off with a single, GABBY OLIVARRIA (3-4, 2 3B, 2B, RBI, 2 R) banged a double, Castro drove in Flores on a grounder to third and ERIN BROWN singled in a run.

Brown was making her varsity debut for Helix.

In the circle for the Highlanders, SHAREENA LACHANCE threw a complete game as she gave up 8 hits while only giving up the 1 run.

(EL CENTRO) SOUTHWEST 6, WEST HILLS 1 – The Eagles of Southwest (El Centro) took full advantage early on and never looked back as they were able to claw the West Hills Wolf Pack in Cougar Classic pool play action.

The Eagles in the top of the first thanks to three walks, a double and a home run scored all the runs they would need as they led 5-0.

Despite a lead double by SIERRA SCHLICHTING the Wolf Pack went down 1-2-3 to end the first inning.

EC Southwest would tack on another run in the top of the fifth on a solo shot to make it 6-0.

West Hills would score their lone run in the bottom of the sixth as RYLEIGH DOBYNS (1-3, 2B) doubled, HALEY VALLES (run) came into run, ALEX GUAY (1-3, RBI, 2B) followed with a booming double that scored Valles to make it 6-1 and that is where it would end.

EASTLAKE 3, PATRICK HENRY 0 – The Titans of Eastlake shut down the mighty offense of the Patrick Henry Patriots as they took the Cougar Classic pool play contest.

The Titans in the bottom of the first were able to put up a run off Patriot pitcher MADISON JAMES to take an early 1-0 lead.

Patrick Henry in the top of third had an opportunity when SAVANNAH CHAPMAN led off with a single and advanced to third as LAILA SPRACKLEN reached on an error by the shortstop of Eastlake. However, despite having runners at first and third the Patriots were shut down to end the inning and also the threat.

Eastlake added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 3-0.

Patrick Henry had its greatest chance to get back into the ballgame in the top of the sixth inning as the first two batters got on base.

Leadoff hitter ARIANA RIOS singled, CRISTIONA CACCAMISE followed with a single and Rios advanced to third. Unfortunately, though the next three batters would be retired and that was all she wrote for the Patriots in the inning.

MONTE VISTA 18, HOOVER 0 – The Monarchs offense struck early and often as they put up 14 runs in the first couple of innings including 11 in the second on their way to 18 runs on 21 hits in their Monte Vista Tournament victory.

MISSION BAY 11, SERRA 0 – The Buccaneers of Mission Bay took advantage of their opportunities and used pitching to shut out the Conquistadors in Monte Vista Tournament action.
