ROUNDUP: Valhalla, Henry, Christian win tourney games

ESCONDIDO (3-10-17) – The Valhalla Norsemen are used to playing close games. Their contest Friday against Brawley was no different as they came away with the 4-3 victory in Cougar Classic pool play.

In the bottom of the first inning, RACHEL SHELSTROM (1-3, 3B, R) tripled and scored when KENNEDY LABSHERE (2-2, 2 RBI, 2B) drove her in on a double to lead 1-0 early on.

That lead would evaporate in the top of the second as the Wildcats pushed across a couple runs to take a 2-1 lead.

Both teams would hold each other in check until the top of the sixth when Brawley tacked on another run to lead 3-1.

Valhalla in the bottom of the inning pulled within 3-2 thanks to a Labshere sacrifice fly that scored JADE HILL who led off with a single.

Starting pitcher for Valhalla, LILY METSCH, held the Wildcats in check which led to the wild bottom of the seventh.  Both KELLY OLSON (1-3, 2B, R) who doubled and SAMMY GREEN who singled would score.

Leading to the game-winning run was a miscue by the Brawley second baseman who bobbled the ball hit by LEXI SMEAR and the throw was late to first which would have been the final out of the contest.

However, due to the miscue, Green was able to score from third for the winning run giving Valhalla the come from behind victory.

Garnering her second victory on the season was Metsch.

 

PATRICK HENRY 11, IMPERIAL 0 – The offense for Patrick Henry exploded and the pitching took care of the rest as the Patriots blanked the Tigers in Cougar Classic pool play.

In the bottom of the third, CASSIE VAN TIL doubled, which scored ARIANA RIOS, who had reached on an error, LAILA SPRACKLEN and CRISTIONA CACCAMISE singled, they would both score on a single by ANDREA WRIGHT.

Other Patriots who would score in the inning were SAVANNAH CHAPMAN, LAUREN NETT and MADISON JAMES, who also doubled.

Patrick Henry would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, which included Wright doubling in Caccamise, who singled.

 

CHRISTIAN 19, SWEETWATER 2 – Runs came a plenty for the Christian Patriots as they pounded out 15 hits in their Monte Vista tournament victory over the Red Devils.

Christian would score seven runs over the second, third and fourth innings, but it would be in the top of the sixth when they would do the most damage with twelve runs.

In the sixth inning, SILENT RAIN ESPINOSA would blast a grand slam in going 3-for-5, while the Patriots would bat around.

ASHLEY CARTER would double and single in going 3-for-5.

On the day, every single Patriot was able to contribute in some way, shape or form, whether it was getting a hit or scoring.

Carter on the day would garner the victory in tossing all six innings.

 

MATER DEI CATHOLIC 9, WEST HILLS 1 – It just wasn’t the day for West Hills, as they were limited to 4 hits in their loss to the Crusaders in Cougar Classic pool play.

The Crusaders in the bottom of the first inning jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back as they would tack on runs in the bottom of the third, fourth and three more in the fifth to round out their scoring.

The Wolf Pack started in the top of the first with a leadoff double by SIERRA SCHLICHTING but the next three hitters were retired in order to end the inning.  A couple of innings later in the top of the third, the Wolf Pack got on the board thanks to a

RAMONA 9, GROSSMONT 1 – It was all Ramona as they scored nine runs over the first two innings and never looked back as they held Grossmont and its offense in check in Cougar Classic pool play.

The lone run for Grossmont came in the bottom of the first as CHLOE CAMARERO led off with a walk and she would later score on a sacrifice fly by TAYLOR BAEZ to make it 2-1 but that was the closest they would get.

The only hit on the evening for the Foothillers came courtesy of ALLY ALLMAN in the bottom of the fourth inning as she singled.

RANCHO BUENA VISTA 5, STEELE CANYON 1 – In Cougar Classic pool play, the Longhorns kept the Steele Canyon Cougars in check with runs early on.

Steele Canyon was limited to 5 hits on the evening but had a couple opportunities to score but couldn’t take advantage.

Their lone run came in the bottom of the fourth inning as MACKENSIE PEARLSTEIN drove in the single run which scored ELIZABETH BOTT.
