LA MESA (3-11-17) — The Helix Highlanders rolled over Mater Dei 9-1 behind the pitching of JORDAN JACKSON, JOSIAH ESTRADA and JACOB HERNANDEZ on Friday (Mar. 10) in a non-league contest.

The Helix trio allowed only 3 hits in the victory.

ERICK SMELKO led the charge for the Highlanders, going 3-for-4 with 3 hits and 3 runs, one RBI and one walk.

ROMAN PADILLA was 2-for-4 with 4 RBI for the Highlanders.

Helix score five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to turn a 4-0 game into a 9-run blowout at the time.

Jackson started and delivered four innings, striking out four.

GROSSMONT 6, SAN YSIDRO 0 – Grossmont spun a shutout victory over the Cougars behind the hard-core pitching of CHRIS GIOVENGO and JAKE ENNIS in Friday’s (Mar. 10) Aztec-Foothiller Tournament contest.

The Foothillers scored 3 runs in the 4th inning to defeat San Ysidro.

Grossmont bolted in front in the 4th inning on a pair of singles by KALEB TEDOKON and JAYDEN LOMBARDO. Tedokon scored on a base hit by JACKSON HULETT.

Giovengo slashed a base hit in the 6th to score another run for the Foothillers. AUSTIN ODOM doubled for an RBI and scored on a hit by MAX FORD.

Giovengo also had 7 strikeouts in six innings of work, allowing just one hit. Ennis pitched a perfect seventh.

Giovengo had a no-hitter into the fifth when the Cougars broke the ice with a two-out single.

MADISON 5, WEST HILLS 1 – West Hills avoided the shutout in the 7th inning of Friday’s (Mar. 10) encounter in Santee as TREVOR COMMERFORD doubled and SAM HUGHES singled to right. GAVIN KONDYRA grounded out to score Commerford.

West Hills committed five errors in the fateful 5th inning, along with three balks and a catcher’s interference call, as the collapsing house of cards led to five unearned runs to previously winless Madison in Aztec-Foothillers Tournament play.
The loss dropped West Hills to 2-1 overall, but they could still reach next weekend’s championship round if the Pack sweeps their next two games, starting Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. at home against Mater Dei.
Warhawks starting pitcher James Shimashita allowed five hits and struck out six in his six innings of work.
BRADEN SANFORD posted his third consecutive multi-hit outing for West Hills.

EASTLAKE 16, CHRISTIAN 2 – Eastlake jumped on Christian for 16 runs on 16 hits Friday (Mar. 10) in an Aztec-Foothiller Tournament game that left the Patriots little to say.

All the Patriots had to say in the end was that they launched two solo home runs by GARRETT NIELSEN, one in the 4thinning and one in the 6th.
