SAN DIEGO (3-22-17) — In the early going Granite Hills has competed against some of the best teams in the county, including Ramona, Hilltop, Bonita Vista, Rancho Bernardo.

The latest knockout for the Eagles was an extra inning, 1-0 victory in the 11th frame over Cathedral Catholic on Tuesday (Mar. 21) in a Hilltop/Lolita’s Tournament game in South Bay.

“It was a brilliant effort by pitcher WILLIAM BURTON, who allowed only 2 hits in 10 innings,” said Granite Hills coach JAMES DAVIS.

“Pitching is so strong so far, we’ve been fortunate,” Davis added. “There’s a lot of pressure to pitching but our guys have held the grade.”

BRADY JOSLYN doubled and scored the winning run on a base hit by SEAN ROSS in the final frame.

CHRISTIAN 8, WEST HILLS 1 – “It was something like a Little League game,” said Christian Patriots coach MIKE MITCHELL of Tuesday’s (Mar. 21) Bill Dickens/City/Metro Tournament game won by Christian over West Hills 8-1.

“There were nine errors in the game. The lowlight of the game is West Hills threw the ball in the dugout.”

On the offensive end, JACOB KELTNER slashed a 2-run single as a pinch-hitter for the Patriots.

Pitcher BRAD JEREMIAH spun five innings and allowed 3 hits, one run, no earned runs, walked 5 and posted his 2nd win in as many decisions.

ETHAN CONTRERAS pitched two shutout innings, allowed one walk and one strikeout.

CHASE WEHSENER had 2 hits to spark the Patriots (5-1).

Jeremiah overcame two rough innings aided by defensive mistakes, yet only trailed 1-0 before the Pack returned the defensive faux pas, including a game-breaking play to erase any comeback hopes in the 5th inning with the score standing at 2-1.

With a pair of Patriots on base, Christian’s ALONZO RICHARDSON struck out to end the inning. However, the pitch was dropped, so the Wolf Pack catcher recovered the ball and attempted to tag out Richardson. The ball slipped from his hand. Loading the bases.

The West Hills pitcher then scooped the ball and attempted to throw out the Christian batter at first, but the late throw sailed down the right-field line. Two runs scored.

Richardson raced to second base, but the ball was still loose, so he was beckoned to third by the base coach. The throw from the corner skipped past third base and into the dugout. The umpire awarded home plate to Richardson to make it 5-1.

“I haven’t seen a play like that in a long, long time,” said Jeremiah, a junior, referring to his elementary school days. “But it allowed me to catch a breath.”

Jeremiah opened the season listed more like a supporting role pitcher that the stopper, but with the Patriots’ No. 1 arm scheduled for an MRI, he may need to grow up quicker than anticipated.”I always seem to start slow, but I’m getting better,” he added. “Once I find my rhythm, I seem to do alright.”

“Brad went 1-and-0 to a bunch of batters, but almost never went 2-0 and that got him through the game,” said Mitchell. “His curve ball was really nasty.

“He’s still very young, but we going to need him to develop quickly in case we don’t get any of our other arms back.

EL CAPITAN 4, BONITA VISTA 2 – El Capitan clipped Bonita Vista in Tuesday’s (Mar. 21) Bill Dickens/City/Metro Tournament game.

The Barons and Vaqueros tied the game 1-1 in the first inning but El Capitan was able to edge the Barons with runs in the 3rd, 4th and 6th innings.

MADISON 4, VALHALLA 3 – The Valhalla Norsemen had their Bill Dickens/City Metro Tournament opener slip away in the 1st inning of the Hilltop/Lolita’s Tournament
and couldn’t quite catch up for the rest of the game Tuesday (Mar. 21) at Madison.

A walk and catchers interference set the table for Madison in the 1st. It was followed by a double, sacrifice fly, single and a throwing error and when the dust settled the Norsemen were down 3-0.

Valhalla would close the gap in the 3rd. RYAN PEROT led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pick off attempt. Perot would score on a LEWIS DIRKES single and JAKE BARBA would then plate Dirkes.

Madison touched up starter ED DEMPSEY for a fourth run in the 3rd via a hit, stolen base and an error.

Valhalla tallied their final run in the 5th on a walk to CAMERON ZAMUDIO. A COLE HOWARD single moved Zamudio over to third. Zamudio would score when Howard was caught between first and second. A late 7th inning rally fell short for the Norsemen. With the loss the Norsemen fall to 2-4 on the young season.

The big blow in the 3rd inning was a double by JOSH ESQUIBEL for the Cougars. LUKE ARIAS hit a single to left and BILLY TELLOUS singled in Esquibel.

In the first inning AARON TAYLOR had a hit to center field. One out later Arias hit a shot to right center. Following another out, TREVOR DICKEY hit an infield ball to third, scoring Esquibel.

EASTLAKE 1, GROSSMONT 0 – One thing about Eastlake and Grossmont, it’s gonna be a close call on either side.

So far the Titans own a 2-1 lead over the Foothillers.

Eastlake scored the only run of the Bill Dickens/City/Metro Tournament on Tuesday (Mar. 21) behind the pitching of Mason Thompson.

In the first inning the Titans walked, Sonny Rivera walked and went to second on a base hit by Casey Schmitt, which scored Rivera for the only run of the game.

ST. AUGUSTINE 4, HELIX 3 (10 inn.) – Earlier in this week Helix was the No. 1 ranked team in the San Diego Section. Since then, the Highlanders have dropped two in a row, falling to Eastlake in the championship game of the Aztec/Foothiller Tournament and to St. Augustine in Tuesday’s (Mar. 21) Bill Dickens/City/Metro Tournament.

The Highlanders managed 9 hits against the Saints but still came up short at the end.
