El Cap shines in second-straight win

LAKESIDE (12-7-17) – It was a shootout out in Lakeside Thursday evening as the Lady Vaqueros of El Capitan showed they have the stamina to defeat their opponents, knocking off the visiting Pilots from Our Lady Of Peace at the Matador Classic., 53-48.

“We have a young team,” said El Capitan head coach Darrin Curtis. “It’s early in the season and we are still figuring out what our roles are.”

The 2-2 Lady Vaqueros jumped out to a 13-2 lead through the 1st quarter, and following a technical foul against OLP in the 2nd quarter, the Lady Vaqueros held on to the lead 18-6 at the half.

Freshman MACKENZIE CURTIS, daughter of the head coach, had 9 points in the first half.

The Pilots did, however, hit a few three-point beauties to make it close and trail 25-17in the 3rd quarter.

Our Lady Of Peace was not finished as they continued to hit a few more 3-pointers to comeback within 1-point, 28-27.

The Vaqueros would lead 34-29 at the end of the 3 and won their 2nd in-a-row.

“Our team begins with our defense,” Curtis said. “SHIANA PERES and VIRGINIA MARTIN took the lead guarding OLP’s
best player.

“JORDAN GRANDY was looking for steals, while STEPHANIE ADAMS did a fantastic job cleaning up the boards,
and DEVON BULLOCK ran our offense.”

Curtis finished with 29 points.

“It is a very young team that is continuing to learn as we go, and our confidence is growing as we are working on getting better everyday, together,” Curtis said.
