MOUNT MIGUEL 72, BISHOP GORMAN 70 — At Durango, Nev., CAMARA DOUGLAS’ basket in the waning seconds of the game broke a 70-all tie and lifted the top-ranked Matadors to a win over the Gaels in the Battle Born Classic.

Red-hot CITALLI GURROLA’s 3-pointer put Mount Miguel up 70-68 before Gorman tied the game at 70-all with a basket.

Douglas, who missed a game on Friday night against Granite Hills with a sprained ankle led the Matadors with 22 points, 12 rebounds, three steals and a block.

Despite the physical setback, Douglas’ had a strong game in the high-profile event and matchup.

The Matadors, ranked 35th in the country, had a pretty strong effort down the entire roster to beat Gorman.

Freshman sensation SYLENA PETERSON added 21 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals.

Gurrola scored 18 on six three-pointers for Mount Miguel, which improved to 16-0.

MICHELLE CORLEY had four points, three rebounds, four assists and a steal.

TIAJA BENNETT had three points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal.

DEDE MCBRIDE had two points, three rebounds and three assists.

NYA MAGA contributed two rebounds and an assist.

Gorman rallied from a 67-58 deficit midway through the fourth quarter to take a 68-67 lead.

 

HELIX 53, PATRICK HENRY 38 – Helix improved to 12-4 by winning at the MLK Showcase at Christian High over the Henry Patriots.

Helix controlled the game defensively and jumped out to an early lead.

Senior KALIAH KING and freshman SAMONAH BETTS both had 13 points to lead Helix.

The Highlanders next face Mount Miguel on Friday in a Grossmont Hills League battle between 1-0 teams.

 

CRAWFORD 45, EL CAJON VALLEY 34 – Braves sophomore VEAN GORGEES had 13 points, seven steals and six rebounds for the game, but the Colts’ quick start put El Cajon Valley in an early deficit.

Junior LILIAN AKINTONDE added seven points and four assists and freshman SILVIA ABOUD contributed six points and 12 rebounds for the Braves.

The Braves will next face Valhalla in a Grossmont Valley League game on Friday at 5:30.

 

RANCHO BERNARDO 45, WEST HILLS 35 – The Broncos bested the Wolf Pack, which fell to 6-10 following the loss at the MLK Showcase.

The Wolf Pack (1-0 GHL) will next face Grossmont (0-1 GVL, 7-6) on Friday at 5:30 in La Mesa.

 

DESERT CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 55, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 41 – Sophomore ELLIE TURK had 28 points in the game for the Knights, but Desert Christian made a 31-19 halftime lead stand in an MLK Showcase game at Christian High.

Senior JANELLE RODRIGUEZ had 10 rebounds and two blocks to lead FCHS.

Turk added five rebounds and four steals.

Foothills Christian faces Del Lago Academy in the Ocean League opener on Wed. at 6:30 p.m. at Greenfield.
