2018 SAN DIEGO STARS BASEBALL
NATIONAL BASEBALL CONGRESS WORLD SERIES
WICHITA, Kan. (8-8-2018) — The drive may only be about 220 miles, yet the San Diego Stars haven’t met the powerful Santa Barbara Foresters in more than a decade. But that will change Thursday (Aug. 9), when these Southern California powers tangle in the national quarterfinals of the 84th annual National Baseball Congress World Series.
First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. CT as the second of four contests at historic Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The opening ballgame in the money round finds the San Diego Waves, a Western Baseball Association member with the Stars, meeting the San Antonio Angels, a first-week qualifier which has gone 7-0 in the event.
Meanwhile, the Foresters (36-8 this summer) may be the best summer collegiate team in the nation over the past decade, winning four NBCWS national crowns since 2011.
But which Santa Barbara squad will the Stars (27-7) meet in the Elite 8?
In their first two NBCWS outings, the Foresters rolled up 40 total runs to whipping Lonestar Baseball, 18-5, then Dodge City (Kan.), 20-12. However, the club fell flat in a 5-0 setback to the Seattle Studs to conclude pool play., a game which allowed Seattle to also advance.
Conversely, the Stars dropped their NBCWS opener, then took two straight to finish second in Group C. Even if they fall to Santa Barbara, the Stars are guaranteed a fifth-place finish, equaling their second-best finish ever at nationals. The best was a third-place finish in 1999 when they up-ended the U.S. National Team.
The Stars-Foresters game can be seen live on the NBCWS YouTube channel, with Frank Martinez doing the play-by-play.
