2019 SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN HAWKS BASKETBALL
East County Sports staff report
PHOENIX (2-3-2019) – San Diego Christian College guard Fredrick Hayden sank a game-tying 3-point shot with 4:34 remaining Saturday, but the Hawks never could re-take the lead in falling to 24th-ranked Arizona Christian University, 96-90, in a Golden State Athletic Conference contest.
Hayden’s bomb allowed the Hawks to rally from a 10-point deficit to pull even at 92-all. But the host Firestorm answered with a 10-2 run, when center Al Burge scored six of his 13 points, with SDCC unable to move than four points the rest of the way.
Derek Novsek paced San Diego Christian with 24 points, while Hayden added 20, as the backcourt of the Hawks combined to tally 70 points.
ACU forward Callum Lawson finished with a career-high 37 points, hitting 13-of-16 shots from the field, plus a perfect 10-for-10 at the foul line.
Meanwhile, Burge was joined by guards Shane Carney and Terence Shelby with 13 points each.
The Firestorm moved to 19-5 overall (7-5 GSAC), while the Hawks slipped to 7-13 (3-8 GSAC).
San Diego Christian begins a 3-game homestand Tuesday, hosting Hope International. The ballgame will be played at San Diego Mesa College with a special 8:15 p.m. tipoff. The women’s game commences at 6:15 p.m.
