Griffins sweep rainy doubleheader at GWC

2019 COMMUNITY COLLEGE BASEBALL

East County Sports staff report

HUNTINGTON BEACH (2-9-2019) – Between raindrops, the Grossmont Griffins are one of two ballclubs which own the best record among Pacific Coast Conference programs.

The Griffins moved to 4-1 overall following Friday’s (Feb. 8) of Golden West College, 5-in a doubleheader at Fred Hoover Field. The Rustlers also dropped a doubleheader this week to Palomar, which also holds a 4-1 mark.

For Grossmont, pitching was the difference, especially in Game One, when Bailey Roberson and David Lantz combined on a 7-hit shutout.
Roberson, a sophomore left-hander out of El Capitan High, allowed just six hits while striking out four. Only three GWC batters reached second base.

Meanwhile, Lantz, a freshman who hails from Madison, closed the ballgame with two innings of 1-hit ball. Lantz did not get the save as Grossmont scored twice in the top of the 8th to build a 5-0 lead just before the right-=hander entered the contest.

Griffins shortstop Aidan Rasmusson belted a bases-loaded double in the 5th for a 3-0 lead. The bonus runs came via a 2-run base hit by first baseman Trevor Hazelhurst in the 8th.

Game Two saw Grossmont rattle off 16 hits to support winning pitcher Joshua Verdon.

Once again, the G-House mounted a 5-0 lead, as Verden tossed six solid innings, then four relievers closed the contest, including the final inning by Michael Bovee for the save.

Rasmusson (Santana) batted 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Hazelhurst (Granite Hils), now the designated hitter, batted 3-for-5 and drove in a run.
Grossmont next hosts West L.A. at 1 p.m. Saturday at Noel Mickelson Field.
