Wins will validate Norse improvement

2019 EAST COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL

VALHALLA NORSEMEN PREVIEW

Last year: 0-10.

Head coach: Mike Kastan (2nd year)

2018: A winless season had a big bright spot in the rushing of KEGAN BAKER, who returns for his senior season after being named first-team All-Grossmont Hills League last season. He set a school record for rushing yards in a game at El Capitan.

OUTLOOK: Baker, who scored on a 40-yard touchdown in a scrimmage against Scripps Ranch last Friday, isn’t expected to shoulder the load offensively with a deeper roster this season. LUKE PILLSBURY, a junior, returns to start at quarterback and expected to have a plethora of pass catchers. Senior linebacker ETHAN FERKICH is one of the East’s most underrated players entering the 2019 season. The offensive line is led by junior ALLEN KALASHO. The Norsemen also tout the addition of three transfers, including former Helix Highlander JOSH MEREDITH.

SCHEDULE: The Onus is still on this club to earn a victory this season. Valhalla heads into the season as a likely underdog in every contest, however, a strong improvement is expected over last year. Even the Norsemen’s most closely-rated contests are on the road, making earning that victory tougher. The most intriguing game of the season for the Norse may end up being the final home game of the season against El Capitan.
