The Monarchs built a 45-9 lead at halftime to take down the overmatched visitors.

The Monarchs led 19-4 after the first quarter.

Monte Vista eventually built a 49-12 lead with under a minute to play in the third period when Marco Balhin ripped the ball away from a Colt, then drove to the basket for a contested layup.

Monte Vista’s Ivan Maynard led the way with 13 points, all of which came in the first half.

Dyvarre Dawson added 10 points for the Monarchs, including six in the first quarter.

Cameron McKan contributed nine points for Monte Vista, while teammate Lamonte Jenkins finished with eight points.

In the fourth quarter, Niamiah Alston finished a nice passing sequence, getting the ball in the low block and throwing a bounce pass to Jenkins, who went up with an underhand layup while being defending to make it 57-25.

One late sequence saw the Colts defender block a Monarch layup attempt during a 4-on-2 breakaway, only to have a follow missed by another Monte Vista player. However, Hejia Ali kept the hustle up by putting back a subsequent offensive rebound for a basket.

Monte Vista improved to 5-2 on the season while the Colts fell to 0-2.

The Monarchs will face Maranatha Christian next Wednesday in a home game at 7 p.m.
