Knights win again; Torreys topple Pats

SAN DIEGO – The Foothills Christian Knights defeated the Morse Tigers, 55-47, in a game played on Saturday.

Both teams are top contenders in their respective divisions for a CIF title.

Senior Ellie Turk led the Knights with 19 points, including four three-point field goals. She also had nine rebounds, seven assists, and six steals.

Junior Aranxta Fonseca scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Foothills Christian. She also blocked six shots.

“Getting blocks is really important for my defense,” Fonseca said. “As a team, our keys are our speed and quickness, ball fakes and meeting passes, being smart and strong rebounding.”

Sophomore Nataly Bravo added 11 points and four assists. for FCHS.

The Knights improved to 17-4. Foothills plays Mira Mesa on Monday before the start of play in the Pacific League.

“I look forward to this upcoming week and getting started with league play,” Turk said.

Caroline Burke added two points and four rebounds for the Knights, while teammate Faith Wilson had two points, three rebounds, and a couple of steals, and Christie Sarkis  finished with three points and a pair of rebounds

“It was a good, hard-fought win for us,” Foothills Christian head coach Joey Turk said. “Our defense was better tonight, and we beat a scrappy aggressive team. Ellie did a tremendous job for us on both ends of the court. This was a good preparation getting ready for the start of our league games next week.

The Tigers fell to 15-8.

 

LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY 77, CHRISTIAN 53 – The Torreys, ranked No. 1 in the nation, defeated the Patriots on Saturday in a non-league game.

Christian’s Kristin Williams had a three-pointer with just over two minutes to play in the first quarter as the Patriots trailed just 13-9.

The Patriots trailed just 16-14 at the end of the first quarter after Simone James had a pair of field goals late in the quarter for CHS.

Williams added another three in the second quarter to keep the Patriots within 31-27.

The Torreys led 33-27 at halftime.

Williams had a pair of field goals early in the third to pull Christian to within 35-33.

Christian fell to 14-8, while La Jolla Country Day improved to 22-1.

 

LIBERTY CHARTER 38, SWEETWATER 23 – The Lions thumped the Red Devils with a 14-7 start en route to the non-league win on Saturday.

Freshman Sabrina Espelet scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, while sophomore Maria Guatane added 12 points for Liberty Charter.

Junior Tatiana Taylor had four points, blocked three shots and grabbed 15 rebounds for LCHS.

The Lions improved to 14-5 overall.
