LA MESA – On Senior Night, the Grossmont Foothillers defeated the Helix Highlanders, 42-34, in a Grossmont Valley League game to clinch the league championship on Friday.
Grossmont seniors Daneca Perez and Alyssa Chargualaf were recognized.
Both players were four-year varsity members and played key roles in the Foothillers’ CIF Division 2 finals appearance in 2019 (Perez winning the sportsmanship award).
The Foothillers won this one thanks to a dominant fourth quarter, which saw them outscore Helix, 10-2.
Other than that, the teams battled closely throughout, with the score tied at 22-all at halftime.
Le’Niyah Jones led Helix with 14 points. She also had six rebounds and five steals.
Samonah Betts added 10 points, four steals, and eight rebounds for the Highlanders.
The Foothillers swept the season series, winning 46-26 back on April 30.
Grossmont improved to 8-0 in Grossmont Valley League play.
Helix, the Foothillers nearest rival in the standings, has three league losses – two to Grossmont and one to West Hills – in the six-team circuit.

WEST HILLS 47, STEELE CANYON 39 – The Wolf Pack earned their fourth Grossmont Valley League victory of the season by controlling the first half.
Senior Nolie Wiley scored 10 of his 16 points before halftime, as the Wolf Pack led 23-10 at intermission.
Senior Cassidy Steveson had a three-pointer in the first quarter and added another in the third quarter for the Wolf Pack.
Junior guard Katie Cares made a three-pointer in the third quarter to finish the game with nine points for West Hills.
Senior Maddy Glass scored eight points, including a three in the fourth for the Wolf Pack.
The Cougars’ Keyesa Hasan scored all 15 of her points in the second half. She had three three-pointers, including two in the fourth quarter.
Breanna Vaughn and Khamyra Carter both had a pair of field goals for the Cougars.
GRANITE HILLS 37, VALHALLA 30 – The Eagles started to get away from Valhalla but the Lady Norsemen came back to make a good game of it, playing one of their best games of the season.
Junior Fonivictoria Pitiascored six points in the first quarter and sophomore Kyla Harris-Williams had a pair of field goals in the first quarter for the Eagles.
Junior Margaret-Anne Moskus added a basket helping Granite Hills build a 13-2 lead after one quarter.
Granite Hills, which picked up its third Grossmont Valley League win of the season, led just 23-22 but then scored the next six points to end the third quarter with a 29-22 lead as Pitia caught an entry pass and scored, then with 30 seconds left, grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed free throw and scored.
However, the Lady Norsemen would put forth a challenge after trailing 34-24 with four minutes left in the game.
Valhalla junior Kayla Sabri hit a three-pointer with 3:30 to play to cut the lead to seven.
Valhalla senior Cassidy Kalasho banked home a three with just over two minutes to play as Granite Hills (7-10) led 34-30 with 1:45 left in the game.
Sophomore Riley Reyes had Valhalla’s first basket of the game. She hit a three-pointer for Valhalla’s second field goal of the game, which came three minutes into the second quarter, but cut the Granite lead to 13-8.
The Eagles led 18-12 at the end of the first half.
Sabri made a basket, recorded a steal to draw a breakaway foul, and added a free throw to cut the lead to 18-17 not even three minutes into the second half.
Reyes gave Valhalla its first lead on a layup to make it 19-18.
Pitia had an offensive rebound and putback to tie the game midway through the third quarter.
EL CAPITAN 71, EL CAJON VALLEY 20 – The Lady Vaqueros won behind 29 points from senior Mackenzie Curtis.
Sophomore Kaylee Cole added 19 points and 12 rebounds for El Capitan, including three three-pointers.
Freshman Amaya Tone added 12 points, seven steals, and seven assists for El Cap.
Sophomore Ruth Taulanga had six points and 12 rebounds for El Cajon Valley.
El Capitan (18-7, 5-0 GHL) and Mount Miguel (16-4, 5-0 GHL) are set to square off for the Grossmont Hills League title next week with games on Thursday and Friday evening.
MOUNTAIN EMPIRE 45, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 35 – The RedHawks continued to rise, knocking off the Knights in a non-league game on Friday in Pine Valley to improve to 6-4 on the season.
Christie Sarkis led Foothills Christian (2-10) with 13 points, while teammate Carolina Burke added 11 points, including three three-pointers.
CLASSICAL ACADEMY 44, LIBERTY CHARTER 33 – Senior Katie Peet score 12 points and had 16 rebounds for the Lions in a non-league contest in Escondido.
