2021 SAN DIEGO CHRISTIAN HAWKS VOLLEYBALL
ECS staff report
EL CAJON —- For those who keep records, San Diego Christian College has equaled its best start in school history, moving to 4-0 overall after the Hawks thrashed visiting Westcliff University of Orange County, 3-0, Friday (Sept. 3) at the new Salvation Army Gymnasium. Game scores were 25-21, 225-19, 25-23.
Breanna Brooks, last season’s Freshman of the Year in the Golden State Athletic Conference, paced the Hawks with nine kills and four blocks, making the easy adjustment from middle-blocker to her regular position as an outside hitter.
Also leading the offense was Jessica Pinasco with seven kills, while new middle-blocker Celestina Lupeli had six in a balanced attack.
Ariana Velasquez paced SDCC with nine digs to lead the backcourt specialists, while the service leaders saw several payers collect three aces.
In the first two sets, the Hawks always maintained a lead of 3-to-5 points over the Warriors. Westcliff did better in Set 3, tied at 17-all, before San Diego Christian was able to complete the 3-set sweep by registering six straight points. The visitors made one last run to get even at 23-all, but the Hawks tallied the final two points to win in their home opener.
SDCC (4-1 overall) dropped a match against Saint Katherine of San Marcos on Saturday.
