Eagles affirm rating, pummel Poway

POWAY — Granite Hills pitchers Chandler Henry and Spencer Davis combined on a brilliant one-hitter Saturday (Feb. 26), helping the to-rated Eagle pommel the potent line-up of 8th-ranked Poway, 6-1, in tournament action.

Henry only yielded on hit over his 4 1/3 innings. Davis then entered in the fifth to escape a mild jam, going on to fire 2 2/3 innings of no-hit hall to tether the Titans. Davis registered four strikeouts from out of the bullpen.

The Eagles’ offense was surrounded by Ethan McNish-Heider (2 hits, 3 rbi) and Grant MacArthur (2 RBI).

Jacob Embleton registered an RBI single in the second. then McNish-Heider belted a run-scoring, RBI double in the third.

McNish-Heider later posted a 2-run double in the sixth.

In between the blows by McNish-Heider, MacArthur pumped a 2-run homer into left field with two outs in the fourth, also scoring Brenden Lewis (single).

The lone hit and run for Poway came in the fourth. Following a lead walk to shortstop Ryan Kroepel, designated hitter Austin Butler line an RBI double to center field to trim the deficit to 4-1.

Camden Sos also collected a pair of hits for Granite Hills (2-0).

Poway falls to 2-1 with its first loss, falling to the Eagles for the sixth time in the teams’ last eight meetings.

Monte Vista 8, San Diego HS 4
DOWNTOWN — Tyler Lemen, Gavin Daley, and Justyn Stone all collected two hits under the flight path to Lindbergh Field, pacing the Monarchs to their first victory of the season in collapsing on the Caers, 8-4, Saturday (Feb. 26).

Lemon and Stone were joined by leadoff hitter Jacob Schweizer with two RBI each, as the top of the Monarchs lineup batted a composite 7-for-17 with seven RBI.

On the mound, Daley and Stone combined to yield just four hits to the “Downtown Dawgs.”

Daley struck out nine Cavers over six solid innings.

Monte Vista struck early with two runs in the first, then four more in the second to stake Daley to a 6-0 cushion.

Key hits were a solo homer by Lemen and a run-scoring single by Stone in the first.

An inning later, Jacob Schweizer belted a two-run triple. He then scored on an ensuing double by Lemen.

San Diego (0-3) received a home run by senior Wilse Whitaker, a two-run shot to right in third, as the lone blemish to Daley’s performance.


El Capitan 4, Fallbrook 2

FALLBROOK — The El Capitan Vaqueros tallied four times in the third inning, then held to stave the Fallbrook Warriors, 4-2, in tournament action on Saturday (Feb. 26)

It was the first win in three outings for the Vaq Pack. Fallbrook fell to 2-3 overall.

RANCHO BERNARDO — In an early-season meeting between unbeaten ballclubs, 5th-ranked Rancho Bernardo Broncos remained perfect after three outings. The hosts broke a 2-2 contest with a run in the fifth inning Saturday (Fe. 26), the difference in a narrow decision over the Christian Patriots (2-1)

San Dieguito 2, Foothills Christian 0
ENCINITAS — Following an 18-run explosion in their season opener, suddenly the Foothills Christian Knights can’t buy a run.

For the second straight outing, the Knights (1-3) were blanked, this time by a 2-0 count by host San Dieguito.

FCHS has now scored just once in its last three ball games. The Mustangs are now 3-1 overall.
