EL CAJON — For those parents old enough to remember, one of the No. 1 hit songs by the soul and R&B group The Commodores in 1979 was on display in Tuesday’s (Sept. 23) Grossmont Hills League girls flag football opener.

Granite Hills quarterback Taylor Nash was “Three Times A Lady” by firing a trio of touchdown passes in the first quarter, propelling the Eagles to a 19-7 conquest of visiting Steele Canyon.

Nash opened — and closed — her team’s first three possessions with scores, mounting a 19-0 cushion with seconds still remaining in the opening 12 minutes.

“Brooklyn (Spencer) caught our first touchdown, then we just kept on going,” said Nash, who then raced to join her teammates to celebrate after the lights at Valley Stadium automatically turned off just seconds following the contest’s conclusion.

Spencer gathering in a 23-yard pass down the middle for a quick 7-0 advantage. Nash followed with scoring strikes to Halia Patlan — the Eagles’ receptions leader — and Brooklyn Spencer.

Nash’s TD string was finally snapped on a nice interception by Cougars safety Evie Allison, a junior, who jumped an Eagles pass route to garner the theft,

However, Steele Canyon wasn’t able to convert the turnover, nit scoring until the late score in the closing minutes against the second string.

Granite Hills (8-2 overall, 1-0 GHL) shares the league lead with the winner of the late game between Santana and defending champion Santana.

Steele Canyon (11-3, o-1 GHL) saw its 4-game winning streak snapped.

Note: The Cougars contest with undefeated Bonita Vista (10-0), which was canceled because its home field was unavailable due to boys frosh football, has been moved to this Saturday at 2 p.m. We are told the start early enough to avoid youth football.

Elsewhere

No. 4 Grossmont 25, Santana 6

SANTEE — Defending GHL titlist Grossmont , the fourth-ranked ballclub in the CIF-San Diego Section, took its league opener with a road triumph at Santana.

Individual statistics were not reported at press time.

Grossmont Valley League

Valhalla 113, West Hills 12

RANCHO SAN DIEGO — Valhalla prevented West Hills from both on both point-after0touchdowns, the difference in a Grossmont Valley League opening victory by the host Norsemen.

Since the other league game (see below) was rescheduled, Valhalla (2-7-1 overall) sits alone in first place following just its second win in the program’s first season. The Orange, which dropped their first five ballgames, is now a respectable 2-2-1 in their last five outings.

West Hills (2-4, 0-1 GVL) has one positive note: they scored the most points ever in a loss, so the offense is improving.

Monte Vista at El Capitan — This contest was been moved to Friday at 5 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the El Cap boys football team — similar to the situation in basketball when both genders in hoops play in the same gymnasium on Fridays (good job avoiding any Title IX problems).

Western League

Cathedral Catholic 25, Patrick Henry 21

CARAMEL HIGHLANDS — Despite a convoy of former players leaving the program, visiting Patrick Henry came with minutes of upsetting first-place Cathedral Catholic, buts the Dons scored late to escape to move to 6-0 in Western League plat.

Among the players to leave Patrick Henry are the standout Jones sisters — junior Megan and sophomore Rian — who now perform for Steele Canyon.

Non-League

Mable O’Farrell Charter 40, El Capitan 19

LAKESIDE — El Capita, which moved its league opener against Monte Vista to Friday, elected to fill the scheduling void against Mabel O’Farrell Charter.

However, the Falcons, located less than a half-mile west of Morse in the Skyline district, proved they are very strong despite their small enrollment, moving to 8-2 with its wire-to-wire triumph by posting the third-highest points total this season.

UPDATE: El Capitan reported (on Thursday) and senior Ravan Haizlip (left) registered three interceptions against the Falcons.

Haizlip is believed to be the first Grossmont Conference player to record three thefts in a single game.
