SPRING VALLEY (3-2-16) — Mount Miguel isn’t used to trailing at home but that was the case as they took on the Serra Conquistadors in the CIF San Diego Open Division consolation bracket, Tuesday (Mar. 1st), but the Matadors were able to win with some dramatic flair in its 48-47 victory.

Both teams went back and forth in the first quarter and were even at 7-7 after the first quarter.  The second quarter was more of the same as both teams played what some would call sloppy play but the Conquistadors were able to edge the Matadors 16-15 to take a 23-22 lead into the break. Hampering the Matadors was the fact they shot poorly from the field going 9-20 in the first half.

Serra was able to control the contest the entire third period and would keep their lead for almost the entire contest. Mount Miguel couldn’t get closer than 4 points for quite a while as Serra was able to lead by as much as 6 points. Trailing 37-32 after three periods, the Matadors were finally able to break through.

Making sure they wouldn’t lose on their home court, SATERA BATES poured in 15 points and AMBER HARD drilled 12 points for the Matadors’ cause.

The final stanza would be the exciting portion as both teams again went back and forth. Every time Mount Miguel would score, Serra would answer with a basket of their own to extend their lead. Thanks to a little run, the Matadors with 1:13 remaining would find themselves trailing only by a point thanks to a basket by DESTINI ANDERSON and would finally get over the hump to take their first lead of the game since early on thanks to Bates being fouled and going to the charity stripe for the one and one bonus. She would proceed to make them both to give the Matadors the lead at 48-47 with about 19.1 seconds remaining in the game.

The Conquistadors would have an opportunity to win but as one of their players dribbled to the hoop she lost the ball and perhaps she was fouled but the officials didn’t blow their whistle and the Matadors regained possession. They would be fouled and miss the bonus, giving Serra one more shot but the desperate heave missed the mark.

Mount Miguel: Satera Bates 15 (2 reb, 2 ast, 4 stl, 2 blk), Amber Hard 12 (8 reb, 1 ast, 3 stl, 2 blk), Rozlyn Pierce 7 (7 reb, 1 ast), Destini Anderson 7 (5 reb, 3 ast, 1 stl, 4 blk), Camara Douglas 5 (10 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl, 1 blk), Tiaja Bennett 2 (2 reb).
