RANCHO SAN DIEGO (4-22-16) — At the outset, it appeared Steele Canyon was headed for another Grossmont Hills League loss as the visiting Grossmont Foothillers stormed to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of Thursday’s (Apr. 21) contest.
The Foothillers delivered a powerful one-two punch as CALVIN FARRIS was 4-for-4 with a double, 2 triples, a single and 2 RBI.
Even more impressive was the handiwork of catcher JAYDEN LOMBARDO who was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a 3-run homer.
Was it game over?
Nope.
Steele Canyon erupted for 8 runs in the second inning and continued on to cling to its 8-7 first Grossmont Hills League victory in three attempts.
First-place Grossmont tumbled to 2-1 in league and 11-6 overall. The Foothillers were ranked 10th in the county coming into the contest.
The Cougars garnered the majority of their 7 hits in the explosive second inning. TANNER LOGAN slashed an RBI single as did SERGIO ALCARAZ and KANE FIEDLER.
The base-stealing bandit MATTHEW BAGDASAR chipped in with an RBI single to keep the flame burning for the Cougars. Two outs later JOSH ESQUIBEL ripped a 2-run single. He then stole second and third and scored on a throwing error.
Cougars catcher LUKE ARIAS then drove in what proved to be the game-winning run as he doubled in a run to make it 8-5.
Steele Canyon’s offense stalled after that thanks to the pitching of Grossmont’s KANNON ROMERO who, after giving up 3 runs and 4 hits in the big inning, allowed only one hit over the final four frames. He walked one and struck out 6 but was tagged with the hardluck loss.
Four Steele Canyon pitchers took turns on the hill, with MICHAEL FITCH pitching 4 2/3 innings to run his record to 3-0.
Grossmont positioned itself into producing a tie in the seventh inning before LANDON SCHIRER came on to get the final out and earn the save for Steele Canyon.

EL CAPITAN 8, HELIX 7 – El Capitan capitalized on 6 unearned runs and 4 errors by the Helix infield to hold off the Highlanders for the Vaqueros’ first Grossmont Hills League win in Thursday’s (Apr. 21) encounter in Lakeside.
El Capitan had to overcome 5 RBI on 3 hits including a 3-run homer by JACK STRONACH for the Highlanders (10-6, 2-1). Stronach also allowed one earned run in three innings of relief but it wasn’t enough to rescue the Highlanders.
“Stronach had a great game but he didn’t have much help,” said Helix coach COLE HOLLAND. “We did not beat the game of baseball; we beat ourselves.”
El Capitan took the lead in the first inning on a double by KENNY OLHAUSER and back to back doubles by Olhauser and VICTOR CARLINO.
Olhauser finished 3-for-5 with a double and a triple and 3 RBI. Carlino drove in a pair of runs for the Vaqueros with a double.
TRISTAN DUNCAN was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and DAWSON McCLANAHAN was 2-for-3. JAKE MEDFORD was 1-for-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI for El Capitan.
Pitching was on the short side for both teams.

GRANITE HILLS 8, VALHALLA 0 – This game belonged to the pitching of ANDREW BROWN who struck out 12 and executed a complete game 3-hitter for his 4th win against 2 losses in Thursday’s (Apr. 21) Grossmont Hills League contest.
Brown has an East County leading 54 strikeouts in 48 2/3 innings.
The Eagles were led on the offensive end by DARIEN COSSIO who smacked a single and a double to drive in 3 runs, including the game-winning RBI.
In the third inning JOSH VERDON reached base on an error and moved up two bases on a single by DILLAN SHRUM. Cossio then hoisted a sacrifice fly to give the Grossmont Hills League-leading Eagles the lead.
In the fifth inning a Valhalla error opened the door for the Eagles. Once again Cossio delivered the big hit as he doubled in BRYCE STRICKLAND and JOSH VERDON.
In the sixth inning BLAKE ST. CLAIR singled, moved up two bases on an error and a wild pitch and scored on a base hit by BRADY JOSLYN.
Closing out the scoring in the seventh inning Shrum was hit by a pitch and Cossio singled to right. Brown then singled to left to score Shrum. Cossio and Brown moved up on a wild pitch and SEAN ROSS hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Cossio. Blake St. Clair then hit a sacrifice fly to score pinch runner RYAN SPENCER.
TREVOR HAZELHURST then slashed a solo shot over the right field fence.
It was a long day for Valhalla which could muster only 3 hits and wasted a solid day pitching by CASEY O’SULLIVAN who surrendered only 3 unearned runs while walking 2 and striking out 9 in five innings.

SANTANA 29, EL CAJON VALLEY 1 (5 inn.) – The Yiddish use a term for when they can’t believe something. That term is “oy vey”!
When people see the final score of the Santana vs. El Cajon Valley Grossmont Valley League baseball game and realize that it was only in five innings, they may use that term.
Santana plated five in the first innings, one measly run in the second, 11 runs in the third and 12 more in the fourth.
There may be a few folks out there thinking, ok what about the fifth inning? Both coaches agreed that there was no point in playing the fifth and mutually agreed to call the game by putting zeros up in the fifth for both teams.
Santana’s DAULTON BARRY (4-1) allowed two hits over the course of his outing, allowing one unearned run and struck out eight. He has 40 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings this season.
The first inning told the entire story of this game. TRISTEN SALINAS led off the game with a triple to right center. REECE HERNANDEZ followed with a double to drive in Salinas.
NOAH NUNEZ singled to push Hernandez to third. JACOB ODENKIRK singled driving in Hernandez and moving Nunez to third. JERRY ALESI singled to bring in Nunez and advanced Odenkirk to second. AIDEN RASMUSSON reached on an error to load the bases, the first of many times on the day. BROCK ELLIS grounded into a fielder’s choice allowing Odenkirk to score, while pushing Alesi to third and taking Rasmusson off the bases. NIK MORA would also hit into a fielder’s choice bringing in Alesi for the final run of the inning.
The rest of the day was pretty much just academic as the competitive portion of the game was over.
El Cajon Valley committed seven errors in the lopsided contest.
