LAKESIDE (4-29-16) — No doubt one of the most unsung pitchers in the Grossmont Conference is Granite Hills’ senior ANDREW BROWN.
Not only is Brown on his way to landing his share of post-season laurels, he’s caught the attention of college and professional baseball scouts.
In his latest outing against El Capitan, Brown needed only 69 pitches to post a 4-0 Grossmont Hills League victory on Thursday (April 28). He allowed only 4 hits and struck out 5 with no walks. For the season Brown is 5-2 with a 1.73 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings. He also has two complete games.
The Eagles put together a 2-run rally in the third inning. TREVOR HAZELHURST opened the door with a double. One out later JAKE FENN singled home Hazelhurst. Then it was DILLAN SHRUM who rifled a single to left center field to make it 2-0.
Granite Hills tacked on some insurance runs in the sixth inning thanks to two hit batters and a 2-run single by BRADLEY HARRIS.

SANTANA 5, MONTE VISTA 1 – The No. 7 ranked Santana Sultans boast a 17-2 record, which is no fluke. That’s why the Sultans are all but a sure thing to capture the
Grossmont Valley League title and have a firm grip on the top spot in the Division II power rankings.
Santana doesn’t figure to be challenged for the GVL title except possibly for West Hills. The league title will be decided by the outcome of the Santana-West Hills meetings on Thursday (May 5), Friday (May 6) and Thursday (May 19).
The Sultans cruised by visiting Monte Vista 5-1 in a league encounter on Thursday (April 28) in Santee.
NOAH NUNEZ rolled his record to 6-0 and lowered his ERA to 1.03 with a complete game effort. He walked one and struck out 6.
Of course pitching is the mainstay of the Sultans. Included in the Santana pitching stable are Nunez, DAULTON BARRY (4-1, 0.66 ERA) and TRISTEN SALINAS (3-1, 3.31 ERA with 2 saves).
“Nunez has been a staple for us all season,” said Santana coach RIGO LEDEZMA. “The big thing in this game is he was able to throw strike one. That and he had command of his fastball. His secondary stuff wasn’t as good as it usually is. Bottom line though is he’s won a lot of big games for us.”
Santana put together a 4-run rally in the third inning as BROCK ELLIS singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by MITCHELL MILLER, then scored on a double by Salinas. With two outs Nunez singled to score Salinas. His base hit was the start of a string of 4 base hits for the Sultans. JACOB ODENKIRK slashed an RBI triple and scored on a base hit by JERRY ALESI.
The Sultans tacked on an insurance run in the fifth as REECE HERNANDEZ doubled and rode home on a base hit by Alesi.
Monte Vista avoided the shutout in the seventh inning as DAVID GARCIA walked. Then the Monarchs produced three consecutive singles by BRENDAN COLLIS, ANTHONY ROSARIO and DIEGO SANDOVAL.
“We’ve done a pretty good job hitting, thanks to our batting coach MARK NOBLE,” Ledezma noted. “He’s really helped our kids adjust to various pitchers.”

WEST HILLS 7, MOUNT MIGUEL 3 – The West Hills Wolf Pack scored four first-inning runs and built an early lead that helped bring home a win over Mount Miguel on Thursday (April 28) in Santee.
The Wolf Pack scored in the first on a couple of errors and a passed ball.
SAMMY SANDEZ had a hot bat for West Hills, as he went 3-for-4 and scored two runs. He doubled in the fourth inning and singled in the first and fifth innings.
ZACH SANDOVAL brought the heat in relief, as the Matadors managed just one hit off him. Sandoval allowed no earned runs, walked one and struck out four during his 4 1/3 innings of work to earn the win.
Two runs crossed the plate in the top half of the third for the Matadors, making the score 4-2.
A sacrifice fly by MIGUEL OROZCO and an error triggered the rally.
West Hills responded with two runs in the fourth, scoring on an RBI triple by BRADEN SANFORD and an RBI single by AARON BARKLEY. Barkley had two RBI for the game. NOAH QUINTANA scored twice for West Hills.
ANDREW MONTIJO had two hits and scored a run for the Matadors, while teammates RUBEN PRECIADO and Orozco both drove in runs.
Junior ANGEL MELGAR made his debut on the hill for the Matadors after coming off a torn hamstring early in the season. He pitched 5 innings in relief against West Hills, allowing only 4 hits and an earned run while walking 4 and striking out 3.
“Melgar has been out since the first game of the season,” noted Matadors coach LB HAVIRD. “He came into the game in the 2nd inning and threw 102 pitches in five innings. We are real happy to have another pitcher on staff. He’s one of our best hitters but he can’t run the bases. He gave us real strong encouragement with his pitching.”
