EL CAJON (9-16-16) — On what’s been predicted to be a hot afternoon Saturday (Sept. 17), the Grossmont College Griffins (2-0) will open the home season against perennial state power El Camino (2-0) at Mashin-Roth Field. Kickoff is at 3 p.m.

Known traditionally for their offensive might, the Griffins have relied heavily on their defense which has helped produce victories over San Diego Mesa 49-21 and Los Angeles Harbor 37-27. Both were road games.

Grossmont has recorded 9 interceptions in eight quarters, which only seems to dare opponents to attempt to score on them. And so the first two teams have, ringing up six touchdown passes on the Griffins.

Grossmont continues to develop its running game. Freshman running back KEITH FULTON piled up 123 yards in 23 carries and a touchdown against L.A. Harbor. NEHEMIAH BROWN has rushed for 122 yards and 3 touchdowns in the first two games.

Scrambling quarterback BRAD CAGLE has thrown for 393 yards and 4 touchdowns for the Griffins, while backup SPENCER MOYER has clicked on 2 of 6 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown.

The Griffins are advancing off a come-from-behind victory over the Seahawks of L.A. Harbor. To keep their winning streak intact they will have no small challenge against El Camino.

Nathaniel Vaughn’s interception in the end zone in the final seconds ended a Moorpark College comeback bid and helped El Camino escape with a 31-29 nonconference road win on Saturday (Sept. 10).

El Camino led 28-3 midway through the second quarter, but Moorpark scored 20 unanswered points to pull within five by the late third quarter.

GRIFFIN GRAFFITI:  For the second game in a row freshman defensive back JORDAN ELLIS earned Defensive Player of the Week. He intercepted two passes, returning one for a 17-yard touchdown in Grossmont’s victory over L.A. Harbor. In two games Ellis has collected 4 interceptions and scored twice, including a 105-yard scoring romp against Mesa. . . Also nominated for SCFA honors was freshman running back KEITH FULTON who rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries against L.A. Harbor. . . El Camino is 4-2 in the series against the Griffins, including capturing the last meeting between the two 34-7 in 2011. . . El Camino is ranked No. 13 in Southern California, while Grossmont is No. 26. . .Both teams are 2-0.
