SANTEE (2-8-2022) — Times have changed significantly, the Granite Hills boys basketball program has been competitive for quite a few years now, the lady Eagles basketball team has been struggling even a few years prior to Brianna Martinez as head coach, and had to rebuild under the guidance and buying into current head coach Jermani Stewart, and her system.

It helped quite a bit to have the senior transfer, Jade Hughes, technically joined the Lady Eagles the year that the COVID-19 pandemic started. Then you have the normal sit-out period, as she came from Valhalla.

From day one, Stewart knew she had a chance to mold these girls into league champs.

The Lady Eagles (15-10, 7-3 GVL), came into Santee on Tuesday evening to face the Lady Wolf Pack (11-9, 3-6 GVL), of West Hills High.

The Lady Eagles are third versus the No. 5 in the league.

As the previous matchup was at Granite Hills, the Lady Eagles won, 44-36, pretty close, but a win nonetheless.

It was like the Lady Eagles just continued their domination, but this time, were not coming out slowly on offense and the Eagle defense held the Lady Pack on their court to just six points as Granite put up 26 to put the score at 26-6 at the half.

Surely Stewart summed it up at the half to keep your foot on the gas pedal and do not let up as all of the league games need to be wins from here on out were going to be wins, for seeding in the playoffs and any chance at catching the Steele Canyon Cougars, who had already swept the Lady Eagles.

The second half was a little too close for comfort as the Lady Wolf Pack put up 16 points in the second half had the Lady Eagles only 18. However, with the slow start in the first half for the host Wolf Pack only put up six points the entire first half. With that being said the Lady Eagles would now sweep the Lady Pack as they really took this one and put it to bed as Granite got the win, 44-22.

Superstar senior Jade Hughes, the only Eagle with double digits, led the team with total points of 11, 16 rebounds, and a steal. Hughes really taking care of the boards.

Jasmine Yakob has also been a key component of this Lady Eagle wins, as Yakob put up nine points and seven rebounds. As the Eagles continue their small, but possible league title.

“We have really been trying our best out there on the court, we put hard work and dedication into our games. I also try to make sure all of our players are on the same page during the games. I believe that the way our team has been playing, we have the potential to make it to the playoffs, defeat our opponents, and possibly make it to the championship. I have great faith in our team. We are family and no matter what happens we are proud of all the hard work we have put into this basketball season,” said Yakob.
