CIF Football ’23: Divisions Declared

COLLEGE GROVE – On Wednesday (Jan. 3), tIF-San Diego Sections announced the division alignments for the 2023 football season.

Among Grossmont District schools, Helix and Granite Hills will be in Division I/Open Division, while Steele Canyon slips to Division II, joining Christian of the City Conference.

The Eagles were in Division II last season, winning its first-ever San Diego Section CIF championship on the way to a State CIF title, as well.

In Division III, East County is represented by Santana  remains while Mount Miguel gets elevated from Division IV.

In a mild surprise, West Hills, Morse and Patrick Henry both drop from D-3 to D-4, joining Grossmont, which fell two full divisions from D-2, and El Capitan

Division V features El Cajon Valley as the team with the best power index. The Braves are joined with Monte Vista, Valhalla  and Mountain Empire.

Foothills Christian will remain in 8-man competition, while Liberty Charter of Alpine is a club program playing varsity flag football.

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Early in the 2022 football season, Anessa Carroll, the director of athletics for Monte Vista High, paid a visit to Big Sky Conference country to meet former Monarchs football standouts. Blake Schmidt and Sebastian Valdez. Both are defensive tackles for the Montana State Bobcats.

Blake Schmidt

Schmidt was a first-team member on the 2017 All-East Clounty tea, helping Monte Vista to both the Grossmont Valley League and CIFSDS Division III championships.

Sebastian Valdez

Valdez graduated in 2020 and was a member of the 2019 All-East County team, and was the Defensive Lineman of the Year.

Montana State (12-2 overall) advanced to the FCS (Football Championship Series) national semifinals before falling to host South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D., 38-19. BOXSCORE
