Griffins’ Grubbe overpowers West L.A. with 13 Ks

EL CAJON (2-21-16) — CRAIG GRUBBE made sure that the Grossmont College Griffins won their third straight game on Saturday (Feb. 20) as he struck out 13 of the 21 outs while he was on the mound.  The Griffin offense put three runs up on the board to solidify a 3-0 win over West Los Angeles.

Grubbe (1-2, University City) allowed four hits and a walk and racked up the baker’s dozen in the strike out column.

Grossmont (4-5) with one out saw ROBERT BOSTEDT (Granite Hills) singled, he was followed by TANNER PERRY (Steele Canyon) followed with another single to put runners on first and second.  Both Bostedt and Perry pulled off the always exciting double steal.  NOAH STROHL (La Jolla) singled to drive in Bostedt and put Perry on third for a 1-0 Griffin lead.

One inning later, TRAVOR BEARD (San Clemente) reached on an error by the West Los Angeles (4-6) third baseman.  A wild pitch advanced him to second.  COLE FLINT (Steele Canyon) walked to put two runners on base.  ANDRES RIOS (Mater Dei, San Diego) put down a sacrifice to advance both runners.  MICHAEL DIFFLEY (Granite Hills) reached on an RBI error that brought in Beard and gave Flint third.  On an attempted delayed double steal, Flint was thrown out at home when the throw from the catcher was cut off and returned to get Flint at the plate.  Diffley was safe at second and was allowed to advance to third a few pitches later on a passed ball.  Bostedt walked but after a fly out those runners were stranded.  But the Griffins were up 2-0.

In the seventh Grossmont put their final run on the board.  With two out, Mitchell doubled and JUSTEN BURKEY (San Pasqual) followed that with his own double to right centerfield for a 3-0 lead.  Beard walked, but Burkey ended up stealing third on the free pass.  But that is where the runners would end up after the Griffins were caught looking at strike three.

The Griffins will look to get back to .500 when they travel to Lowder Field on the campus of Chaffey College on Tuesday (Feb. 23) for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch in Rancho Cucamonga.
