Griffins can’t make early lead stand in loss to Dons

EL CAJON (2-14-16) — The Grossmont College Griffins took the early lead, but couldn’t hold on to it late as they dropped a 5-3 non-conference result to Santa Ana on Saturday (Feb. 13) at Noel Mickelsen Field.
The two through five batters went a combined 7-for-16, the rest of the Griffins (1-5) combined to go 0-for-16 against the Dons (6-0) pitching staff.
ROBERT BOSTEDT (Granite Hills) led the Green and Gold with three of those hits, while NOAH STROHL (La Jolla) added a pair.
Grossmont got on the board in the first inning. MICHAEL DIFFLEY (Granite Hills) walked to get the ball rolling. Bostedt doubled to right centerfield allowing Diffley to score. After Bostedt scored the second run after back to back wild pitches by Daniel Garcia (W, 2-0). Two batters later, Strohl laced a double to deep centerfield, but was stranded at third after a pair of groundouts.
Santa Ana, who have outscored the Griffins 15-11 in two games this season, got a single tally in the top of the fifth. Tommy Anderson tripled to right centerfield scoring Trevor Steinman who reached on a double to the same location.
Retaliation came moments later when the Diffley walk/Bostedt double combination worked again. The double went down the right field line this time to put a little variety into the festivities, to make it 3-1 Griffins.
DONAVON McCRYSTAL (West Hills) got the no decision as the bullpen failed to keep the lead for him.
ALEC GODOY (L 0-1, Otay Ranch) gave up three runs on only two hits in the two outs that he recorded. ANDREW SCHULTZ (Patrick Henry) did not help matters when he gave up his run, also in the seventh with his three walks. At the end of the seventh the Dons had all they needed as they led 5-3.
The Griffins will try and break their three game losing streak on Tuesday (Feb. 16) when they travel to VictorValley for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch.
