2015-16 EAST COUNTY ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

 

Week 13

#10    ANDREW BROWN, Granite HIlls

The 6-foot-1, 183-pound senior right-hander pitched a 6-hitter with 4 strikeouts in the San Diego CIF Division I playoffs won by the Eagles 3-2 over Torrey Pines in the semifinals. Two days later in the championship game against Vista, Brown bolted out of the bullpen to spin two innings of shutout relief to record the save and clinch the title for the Eagles.

#7     TREVOR HAZELHURST, Granite Hills

The 6-foot-1, 177-pound sophomore made the play of the game in the championship bout against Vista. With runners at the corners and one out, the Panthers attempted to score on a fly ball to right field by Alex Medina. “The ball came right to me,” Hazelhurst said of Medina’s shot. “I was ready for it. I knew I could throw him out if I made the kind of throw I know I can.” He did and it was. Game over.

 

Week 12

#5   STEVEN OUELLETTE, Grossmont

One of the clutch hitters for the Grossmont Foothillers this season has been middle infielder STEVEN OUELLETTE. Not only is he a smooth fielder he’s also a proven hitter. The 6-foot, 165-pound senior batted .500 (6-for-12) with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI as Grossmont won two out of three CIF playoff games in the Open Division.

# 22  MEGAN MALWITZ, Grossmont

The senior center fielder had a big week as she was one of the big reasons why the Foothillers went through the playoffs in the winners’ bracket without a blemish on their record. In the final two games she batted at an .833 clip while driving in 3 runs, scoring a run and belting a solo blast along with a stolen base. In the semifinals vs. Serra she went 4-4, while driving in 3 RBI, and in the biggest game of the season, the CIF Division III Championship game vs. University City, she went 1-2 including a monster solo-jack which tied the score at 1-1 with her blast which propelled the momentum for the Foothillers.

 

Week 11

#29     JASON MOORMAN, El Capitan

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound senior catcher has been a stalwart behind the plate for the Vaqueros. He has a cannon for an arm, which makes him a defensive nugget. Rarely do teams steal bases against Moorman and if they do it’s usually due to a flaw by the El Capitan pitching staff. At the plate Moorman hit .375 with a double and a home run. He also drove in 3 runs and scored as many.

#11    CRISTIONA CACCAMISE, Patrick Henry

The junior catcher was a big part of the Patrick Henry offense as she batted at a .571 clip in two SDCIF Division I playoff games against Westview and West Hills. Against Westview, Caccamise singled in the first run of the game and then doubled in the go-ahead run with the score knotted 1-1 in the third inning. Overall in the two games she logged 3 RBI and scored 3 times along with a couple of doubles to help the Patriots punch their ticket to the semifinals.

 

Week 10

#6     CHASE WEHSENER, Christian

Forget about batting averages for the moment, Wehsener, a junior southpaw, is a magician at first base equal to none. Nevertheless the guy can pitch as he threw a complete game victory last week, allowing 6 hits and one earned run. No question about it, Wehsener can swing the bat with authority. For three games last week he batted .500 (5-for-10) with a triple and 7 RBI.

#18    JESSIE LaPIERRE , Granite Hills

The senior catcher was a big part of the final week of the regular season which would see the Eagles winning the Grossmont Hills League Championship as she batted at a .500 clip in which she drove in 4 runs including jacking a homerun and scoring a couple of runs as well. In the winner take all contest for the league title against Santana she went 2-3 including setting the tone with the game’s first run on a first inning RBI single.

 

 

Week 9

# 14   BAILEY LEWIS, Foothills Christian

In a battle for the Ocean League championship, Foothills Christian and perennial power San Diego Jewish Academy faced off for the title in the first round of the series. The Knights sophomore right-hander (3-5) spun a one-hitter during an 8-inning stint to carry Foothills Christian to the league lead. Lewis struck out 10 and walked none.

#8    CASSIDY MATTHIE, Santana

The junior center fielder played a major impact in the league victory over the Valhalla Norsemen which kept the Sultans in the hunt for the league crown and also helped bolster their playoff position. In the Hills league contest against Valhalla she went 3-3 for a total of 8 bases, including jacking her first career grand slam at Santana and slamming 2 doubles and driving in a career high 6 RBI and also scoring a run as well.

 

Week 8

# 37   SEAN ROSS, Granite Hills

A 6-foot, 182-pound junior, Ross did not pile up any record number of stats but came through in the clutch for the No. 4 ranked Eagles. He batted .333 with 3 hits in 9 at-bats including his third home run. Ross was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI in a key 3-2 victory over Grossmont on Friday (April 29) in a battle of Top 10 teams.

#99    ANNA SHERBURNE, Christian

The powerful senior catcher went perfect at the plate in helping the Patriots climb back into the Eastern League race and into sole possession of third place and also up to No. 3 in the CIF Div. 4 power rankings. Her 4-4 effort on the week included being walked a couple of times intentionally and also clubbing 2 homers and scoring 3 runs against Serra in the victory. She also drove in a combined 5 runs in both victories against Serra and Morse.

Week 7

# 10    JAYDEN LOMBARDO, Grossmont

The versatile junior right-hander has spent the majority of the season behind the plate, but was called upon to make a key pitching start in the championship game of the Bill Dickens-City East Classic against Cathedral Catholic. In the complete game finale against the Dons Lombardo scattered 5 hits, allowed only one earned run, struck out 12 and walked none. As a hitter he was 4-for-10 (.400) with a home run and 4 RBI.

#17    KYLIE MINSHEW, Steele Canyon

The senior helped propel the Cougars this past week as she batted .429 in two Grossmont Hills contests, which both were victories against the Santana Sultans and Valhalla Norsemen. In the game against the Sultans she bombed a 2-out 3-run tying jack in the top of the 7th inning that gave the Cougars new life and helped propel the big comeback victory. Against the Valhalla Norsemen, she blasted a grand slam. On the week she hammered 2 homers, drove in 8 runs and scored 4 and also had a double.

 

Week 6

#24    NOAH NUNEZ, Santana

The 6-foot-3, 190 pound junior right-hander was a double threat for the Sultans, who posted a 3-0 run during the week. At the plate Nunez was 6-for-7 with a double, a triple, 3 runs scored and 5 RBI. He also stole 3 bases. In two appearances on the mound Nunez allowed only 2 hits and no runs while posting his 5th victory without a loss.

#9     HALLE KYLER, Granite Hills

The junior duel threat hit at a .333 clip including a double and drove in 3 runs but did the most damage in the circle going a perfect 3-0 against High Tech SD who was No. 1 in the Division III power rankings, Valhalla and Steele Canyon, of which both were Grossmont Hills League opponents, to help the Eagles to a 2-0 league record. Against these three opponents she registered 21 punch outs in 18 1/3 innings while only giving up 1 run while tossing 11 1/3 shutout innings.

 

Week 5

# 12   ADAM LOPEZ, Grossmont

The 5-foot-9, 200 pound senior batted at a .600 clip with 6 hits in 10 at-bats as the Foothillers won two out of three games in a rain-interrupted week. Lopez collected 6 RBI including one game-winning blow and scored 4 runs. He also pitched one shutout inning in relief, surrendering only one hit and no earned runs while striking out 2.

#10   SAMANTHA MILLER, Steele Canyon

The junior shortstop in three Hills/Valley crossover games against El Capitan, Mount Miguel and Monte Vista batted at a .545 clip, going 6-11. In the victories she scored 5 runs and knocked in 4 RBI, ripped a triple and a double and swiped 2 bases.

Week 4

# 11   JACK STRONACH, Helix

The UCLA-bound Stronach had a blue chip outing in the Santa Maria Righetti Spring Classic as he batted .462 (6-for-13) with a double, a home run and 10 RBI as the Highlanders finished 4-1 in the tournament. He hit safely in four of the five games. Not to be overlooked was his sterling pitching in the final pool play game as he blanked Calabasas 1-0 with a complete game 4-hitter. The 6-foot-3 senior struck out six as he improved his season record to 2-1.

#19   MACKENZIE BENNETT, Santana

The sophomore catcher batted .500 in which she went 7-14 over the week. She helped supply the offensive power for the Sultans as she clubbed a 2-run homer, a double and a triple. In the process she drove in 7 runs and scored a run as well.

 

Week 3

# 12   JOSH ESQUIBEL, Steele Canyon

The steady 6-foot-1, 175-pound sophomore switch-hitter helped carry the Steele Canyon Cougars to the 6A Division championship of the 66th Annual Lions Tournament. Esquibel hit .500 (10-for-20) as the Cougars scored 60 runs in the 5-game sweep. His totals included 8 runs scored, 8 RBI, 4 doubles and 6 stolen bases.

#   5   HANNAH McEWEN, Patrick Henry

The junior center fielder had herself a massive week as she helped propel the Patrick Henry Patriots to 5-0 for the week. The wins included 3 in the Falcon Fiesta tournament and 2 in the Jaguar Classic tournament against No. 8 Vista, and former No. 1 Mater Dei Catholic.  McEwen for the week went 10-19 (.526) with a home run, had 6 RBI, scored 8 runs, 3 2Bs, 3B, and stole 3 bases from the leadoff spot.

 

Week 2

# 3    TRISTEN SALINAS, Santana

A versatile 5-foot-9, 165-pound junior, Salinas batted at a .625 clip, collecting 5 hits in 8 at-bats over the week. He supplied superb power with 3 doubles and a triple. He drove in 3 runs at the top of the Sultans batting order. As a pitcher Salinas worked two shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out three.

#  5   CHLOE CAMARERO, Grossmont

The third baseman had herself quite the week as she batted .562 which included the Cougar Classic at Kit Carson Park where she helped the Foothillers beat three of the top teams in the county. Her offensive prowess at the top of the lineup propelled the Foothillers over No. 7 West Hills, No. 4 Patrick Henry in the Semis and then Division One power Rancho Bernardo in the championship to capture the Gold Bracket championship in the Cougar Classic. Besides the batting average, she scored 5 runs, hit two doubles and two triples and hit a home run.

 

Week 1

# 17     DILLAN SHRUM, Granite Hills

The senior left-hander blanked heralded La Costa Canyon for 6 2/3 innings as the Eagles skimmed to a 1-0 victory over the Mavericks. He walked none and struck out five, giving up only three hits. Not only did Shrum log an overpowering outing, he also slugged a game-winning home run against LCC, which was his third round-tripper in as many games. For the week Shrum was 4-for-9 (.444 batting average) with three home runs and five RBI. He also slugged a triple.

#  7    PAIGE BOWLER, West Hills

The Wolf Pack senior outfielder went 4 for 7 (.571) in the three games of pool play in the Cougar Classic. In three games she knocked in five runs, and hammered three homers and scored three times.
