FLETCHER HILLS — The San Diego Christian College Hawks men’s basketball team surprised visiting William Jessup University by keeping race with the run-oriented Warriors in Thursday’s (Nov. 17) Golden State Athletic Conference opener.Still, the Hawks eventually lost to the nation’s 17th-ranked NAIA ballclub, 80-71, at Grossmont College.
Hawks guard Simaine Stewart got the ball rolling in what would be a dominating first half for the Hawks. His opening three-pointer within the first minute, followed by an immediate Warriors answer, set the tone for the exciting, fast-paced battle that would come.
Hawks junior Josh O’Campo and Ryan Blackmon would lead the ream’s scoring list in the first half, as SDCC took a 41-34 halftime lead.
However, the Warriors returned the favor in the second half to take the road victory
Greg Chew (13 points, 10 rebounds) and Jonah Felix (12 points, 10 boards) wuld register double-doubles for San Diego Christian.
Also scoring in double figures were Ryan Blackmon (12) and Simaine Stewart-Jenkins (11).
William Jessup (5-2 overall, 1-0 GSAC) received a game-best 20 points from Cashemin Williams.
San Diego Christian (1-1 overall, 0-1 GSAC) returns home on Saturday afternoon, hosting Menlo College at 2 p.m.
Menlo 73, San Diego Christian 61
On Saturday (Nov. 19), visiting Menlo built an early lead of between 5-to-7 points and stay there until the final minutes in a GSAC triumph at Grossmont College.
A balanced attack saw Oaks guard Corey Le’aupepe lead the way with 15 points, while forward Kaito Williams tallied 13.
For the Hawks, onah Felix led the offense wqth 19 points, whileGreg Ches again was strong on both ends of the court with 13 points and 8 rebounds.
San Diego Christian (1-2 overall, 0-2 GSAC), which already played San Diego State thius season,now meets the University of San Diego on Monday at 7 p.m. from Jenny Craig Pavillionin Alcala Park (the southwest tip of Linda Vista).

FLETCHER HILLS — The San Diego Christian College women’s Christian team also dropped their home opener to William Jessup, 69-48, Thursday (Nov. 17) at Grossmont College.
Haylie Anderson led the Hawks with 10 points, Hanna Bonacker added 10 rebounds, but the leader in assists, Hanna Bonacker, managed just four helpers.
William Jessup (3-4 overall, 1-0 GSAC) won the first three quartyers to lead 21-12, 38-21 and 54-29, as the Warriors shot 52 percent from the floor — double the percentage of the Hawks (26 percent).
San Diego Christian (2-3, 0-1 GSAC) hst Menlo on Monday at noon in the first half of a women’smen’s dfouble-header at Grossmont College.
Menlo 89, San Diego Christian 55
On Saturday (Nov. 19), the pwoerful Menlo Oaks took every quarter by at least five points, including a 25-10 margin to drop the Hawks at Grossmont College.
The Hawks could not handle Menlo forward Kiara Brown, who scored 30 points on 10-for-15 shooting from the floor, plus 10-fr-11 from the foul line to dominate insiude.
SDCC wa soovrwhelmed inside, three players fouled out and no one scored in double figures among the starters.

San Diego Christian (2-4 overall, 0-2 GSAC) plays for the San Diego County sall college championship when they go to North County to meet University of Saitn Katherine on Monday at 2 p.m.
